Question about Water Outlet on 88 Cylinder

So most of you know I had a hard time getting my cylinder head off. Well I guess the water outlet pipe on the rear of the jug came loose while doing that. I was cleaning it up today and noticed that I could turn it so I pulled on it and it came right out.

I guess my question is, what was holding this in, in the first place? And can I get it to stay in there without welding it?

Both mating surfaces are completely smooth, and it is a fairly tight fit. I don't see anything that could have been keeping it from coming out. I looked at a parts diagram and didn't see that the outlet was a separate piece.

I have my 88 jug off and mine looks to be just a press fit but I can't move it at all

It's a pressed fit. My 86 fell out one day out riding so I grabbed the trusty ole j-b weld and some sandpaper to ruff it up. Then slammed it back together. It's been that way for like 10 or so years now.
