Tragedy in the Race
We need to right off the bat address the tragic loss of one of our fellow racers at this event. 19-year-young Brandon Smith was a member of bike team 327 in the Open Expert Division, with teammates Kurt and Craig Carlson. All three men were from Hesperia CA. Casey Folks was very sorry to announce that at approximately 4 pm yesterday, Brandon was on the bike and riding a fast road section and apparently veered off. He was thrown from the bike into the sand ditch beside the course. Another rider came upon him shortly after his accident and immediately began CPR and tried to administer aid. Additional riders came along and assisted. The TSCO buggy stopped and radioed their own chase helicopter, which immediately responded and assisted in transport as well. Tragically, Brandon was killed at the scene.
After extensive review of the crash site and interviews with other racers, it was determined by both the County Sheriff and BLM that it was a single-vehicle accident and no fault could be assigned. Casey will be speaking with the young man's family futher, but we all send them our condolences and prayers. It's something we have to report rarely, thankfully, so all the more difficult when we do.
Other injuries in the race were relatively minor. There was one reported broken wrist; rider was able to ride in to a pit and the team drove him to the hospital. There was one flash burn incident by a car team, again, they were able to transport themselves to a local medical center. The only incident that required ambulance was a back injury of a motorcyclist.
And thank you to Expert Quad Team 410 rider Lynn Prosser, who picked up a downed bike rider suffering from heat exhaustion and gave them a ride into Pit 5.
