Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question

I dont have an af but when you do the radiator mod why not just use the 500 radiators and weld new mounts on the frame for them?

Most of the guys doing conversions are using CRF frames for it, and the 4 strokes have larger capacity radiators. On the gen2 I did, the rads were just fine for the engine.

the newer rads have larger cores and long single cores instead of 2 rows of smaller cores. basically even though from the outside they look the same size, the newer ones have far higher capacty and cool much more efficiently.

myself and quite a few other had overheating issues in a steeie, converted and with the exact same motor had no more boiling over. the only way to explain it is the newer rads are really that much better. my '86 used to boil over like crazy, every single ride I watched my catch can over flow, moved it to the gen-1, maybe 5-6 times have I watched ANY coolant even drop into the overflow, let alone over fill it.

The crossover hose connecting the two on the bottom would also cause a problem.

I'd be more concerned that the rad does not get covered by the shroud. It reaches from the pipe to 1"+ above the shroud on a gen3, i'd looked at it too.

thanks for all the replies guys, you answerd my curiousity. Danny my 500 constantly has fluid overflowing, that is one down fall to the cr500 steelie.

also has anyone tried to modify the newer rads to fit on a steelie?

I must have the only Steelie that doesn't puke coolant, even in the Texas heat.

I've blown water out ONCE, and it was like 30c, humid as it could be, and i was stuck in a swamp.
usually the 450s that ride with us are chugging like a locomotive and we're stil cool
We tossed the stock 250f rads aside for the 2 core width wider 01 125 ones, they fit the chassis no problem

I am with Roost. Mine has only spewed once and that was my fault. I didn't have the cap all the way on and it sprayed me when I was flogging it. The water wasn't even hot.

I ran my gen3 to the sack in a little more than 1/8mile drag with chad450 sunday night, turned the pipe blue into the U bend, i think it did drip a bit, hard to tell with the wet grass and shit we turned arround in steaming on the pipe, but the rad wont hold more now thats its cooled down

110* airtemp has alot to do with cooling. that may have been why danny had problems. just a guess
