Not unless you spin the crank really fast or turn the output shaft

so moving the countershaft with one hand and moving the shifter with the other should allow me to shift through the gears?

if your sure theres a problem then i would first look at the shifting mechanisms on the outer side of the crankcase (ratchet pawls and shift star and stopper arm). im thinking thats where your problem is. gears in correct with all thrust washers ?

I tore it down that far and for some reason the shiftdrum didn't wanna budge so I split the cases and swapped out the shiftdrum with the one from my 86 and the problem went away

was the pin between the drum and outer shift hub too long?

not sure what the problem was,it didn't wanna budge though,I tried taking the shift star off and reinstalling it but still didn't wanna budge, its the one that was in the cases when I bought them,I just assumed it would be fine, guess not,the pin looked the same as the one on the other one i put in,maybe it has a rough spot on one of the grooves the shift forks ride in?never really inspected it good, just threw the one in i knew was good
