Hands down , I think the winner is this one.... and asthetics have nothing to do with it.



Note the many different plains that the pieces join on. There is not one single "Butt" joint to be seen. The loads are distributed out , and not concentrated at any one connection.

He has more than enough talent and resources to make available at his Racecar fabrication shop a handcrafted "Y" like shown above... Question is.... How much will it be, and how much are folks willing to pay?

Like anything else, the more he makes, the cheaper it will be for all of us.


Cracker is doing a Gen. 3, I'm doing a Gen 4. I want to be able to either provide kits, or frame building services for these two platforms. The long term goal of this site is to keep CR500 motors running forever. Obviously there will be Gen 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 frames to deal with someday.

I want something cost effective, S/H can keep the $16.5 k market all sewn up for themselves.

I want riders to be able find a doner bike, and know that even with limited skills, that THEY can build the bike of there dreams...

I havent contacted Ron yet regarding this..... I'll keep you all posted!

As for the winning pic. I would still plate the front and back. Yeah you know why.

BUT

The "Y" itself never fails, its usualy the connection at the end of the downtube, right where the tops of those gussets stop, focusing the loads even more.

Distribution is the key......

I pick up my donor bike tomorrow (02 cr 250r) I will get it by the shop for Ron to look at and decide what is the best course of action for the "Y". I will need to take my 500 motor out or get a jug and case. We are working on that right now. What ever we do I will post detailed pics of the whole thing. I will keep you posted. I would like to have this done by Oct. 1

Some great looking downtubes pictured here. But how many of you have actually had a frame failure?

What would be included in a "kit". Y-pipe obviously, properly fitted airbox maybe? Pipe and silencer? Off road tank of choice maybe? If a person could buy these parts of this caliber for say...less then $2000. I think it would pick up a good market not yet tapped by SH.

On my 01 donor I had a friend of mine CNC a replacement Y piece. I don't have any pics at the moment, but I can take a few over the weekend and post.

I saw this over on the "other" forum. You guys out West have some serious fabrication and welding skills.

The guy bent his own cradle pieces and CNC'd the Y and the lower mounts. He also did the welding and had it heat treated before and after welding.

Pretty impressive work.

I saw that and think its pretty cool...... but the inner voice keeps telling me ...."These are just dirtbikes..."

My Gen 3 conversion dosent require any cutting of the cradle, and only modest reworking of the "Y"..... With a 125 as a starting point, you do what you gotta do!

Not as fancy or high tech, but in the reach of more folks I think.

Yea... lots of indusrty and machinery in Cali makes anything possible!
