Thank you for allowing me to sign up here  I just picked up this bad boy '97 Friday night after searching for one months.

Image

I think I did okay with it, it's super clean, runs and shifts great and it has a ton of sweet aftermarket parts and a few cool mods (steering damper and suspension set up for my fat ass (220lbs)

I just had to buy it for a couple of reasons; I once had a ' 91 and after many other bikes that followed nothing compared to the HTFO thrill that a 500 delivers :P (closest thing I've had since is my VMax) and secondly as a retirement gift to myself for just finishing my 20 years with the Worlds finest Navy.

I live in in East San Diego County and am planning on being out at Plaster City and superstition with it this coming weekend, hope to meet some fellow CR500 riders here. I look forward to learning from the experts here and maybe I'll be able to make some positive contributions to the CR500 community.

Thanks again

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. And you are all very welcomed.. from my heart of hearts; It was an absolute honor to have served, I'm so lucky and thankful to have been hired in working for the Government doing the same work that I love (fixing gear and training people) that in a way the only thing that has changed is that I don't have to wear a uniform and I don't have to leave my family for months at a time anymore.

I will miss the Chief's Mess  and the sound of "Liberty Call" in places like Thailand, Austrailia and the PI  but will enjoy the long rips on my 500 through the desert and trails of SOCAL.

Started as an undesignated GM out of "A" school. I grew up through the Gunners' Mate Missiles community starting with the MK10 Terrier Launching system on my first ship. Went to the Vertical Launching System after my first sea tour and been there ever since. Currently on terminal leave with offical retirement of 31 March 2009. Already working as a civilian tech rep and loving be a "Double dipper"

Allot of SOCAL members here...

Post by Chief Gunner »

Good Stuff

I noticed quite a few members here are SOCAL locals: Orange, Riverside & San Diego counties.

We'll have to meet up for some rides and some Barley / Hops based therapy sometime!

We might be in plaster city for the race this weekend with some friends that live in Lakeside also. I don't know where we are camping yet but be on the lookout for a couple of 500's putting around.

Nice to see you found your way over here. Congrats, on your new bike. Instead of riding my 650 to your house for maintanance day, I think I will show up on my 500,

Cheiff is the bomb, saved me once.

It would be fun to show up at a Coral Canyon "Bikeslut" ride on the 500's
I wan't to ride there more so we could lead a Banned ride there. Racer Bill took me on some awesome trails.

Sounds good; I'll be loking for you guys. I looked around the site and checked out some of the tech stuff: I did the radiator check, no cold spots The guy I bought the bike from had some other nice machines in his garage, he was an older dude like me (I'm 38) so I'm confident he took really good care of the bike after talking to him and looking it over closely. After taking it for a ride I felt good about buying it :D

The bike has had one top-end rebuild in it's life but has not been bored out

The hoses and wiring all are in excellent shape and the plug looks new too.

I noticed when starting it's got tons of compression ( I had to re-learn the slow two prep kicks to get her to TDC then follow through from the top again after talking to Hammer)

I can get her started with one kick while it's cold so that's cool.

So far everything on the bike is checking out okay. The sprockets & chain have a few more rides left in them before I need to change them. I did notice he was running Renthal sprockets. I have not had good luck with them in the past, my 650 wears them out quick and I'll bet the CR is going to chew them up faster since I ride everything I have like I stole it.

I am going to pull the carb off and check it tonight, if it's like the rest of the bike I'll be happy with it.

The only thing I have found so far that I want to change out right away is the stock Rotors and brake lines. It's got brand new EBC pads on it out front and out back.

I love the difference that Galfer braided lines and wave rotors make with the stopping power so I am going to get a set for the 500.

 But you are BikeSlut. My wife and I had a great time with Mary O'Clair your trombone player. She said you were coming to Carlsbad tonight, let's have a few drinks at the Cayote bar. I dont realy want to go to P.B. this Friday night.

You played a big part in getting me Banned, I owe you a couple drinks, BRO.
