I just picked up a set of 39mm PWK carbs that were originally for a 700cc arctic cat sled and as a result they didn't come with the traditional pull style chokes.

I definantly want to have the ability to use a choke as opposed to just blocking them off. I noticed that the casting around the choke assembly on my PJ is longer than that of the pwk so I assume that they don't interchange.




Has anybody ever ran into a similar situation?
Are any other Keihin chokes interchangable?

I would assume you could order a plunger style choke to replace the cable operated one,they screw in the same way the plunger does

I bet those carbs wont work with a gravity fuel system. They are set up for a fuel pump. If your fuel inlets are angled down they are for a pump set up.

I'm pretty sure I could order one from Sudco as well, but in the interest of time I was looking for another solution.

Just for fun I'm going to unscrew the choke on my pj and see how it fits.

The jetting was way off for a cr500 at 3500ft (190 main and 38pilot) but the needle and slide are the right ones. I think I'll need something like a 165-170 main and a high 50's pilot to get it to run right.

As far as the gravity feed vs inline pump, correct me if I'm wrong but I belive the only reason a sled has the inlet pointed down and a pump inline is because the fuel tank is below where the carbs sit.

I'm going to modify the fuel inlet to be more of a straight shot from the tank, but in theory the gravity acting on the fuel in the tank should easily propel it into an upside down fuel inlet.

No the needle and seat is way smaller. Pull the drain plug out and hook the fuel line on it. It will barely piss out. It wont even get out of first gear and it will run the bowl dry been there done that.

Pull out the float out of both carbs and look at the seat orifice. Then you will see what i mean.

Hmm makes me wonder. The needle in both of them is the DGN. Are you speaking from personal experience with this carb in particular, or another sled carb?

The fuel needle thats hooked to the float not the one on the slide.

I got like 6 39pwks from polaris snowmobiles. All wont work i dont see how a artic cat would be any different.

They got the brass choke adapter and angled down fuel inlets. And i believe 6.O slides.

Lunatic is spot on the money. You're gonna go through a lot of greif getting that carb to work. The slide needle isnt the problem,the opening where fuel is delivered into bowl is smaller than the gravity feed carbs. More work getting sled carbs to work on bikes than its worth.......

I was able to get these for $150 CDN for the pair. Though I would see if they would work for that price.

It seems that the float needle's seat has the number 1.8 and the keihin symbol stamped on it. Does anybody know what the gravity feed 39 PWK's have on them?

It looked to be a press in item, and I would think I could get it out with some swearing. Now the question is how much is the seat and float needle that I need, and are they hard to get?

kehin dosent make a replacement seat. If you get it you would have to rob another one out of a different carb. Either buy a gravity carb or put a fuel pump on it.
