hey whats up everyone, Britincali told me about this site over on thumpertalk. ive always hated hondas, not gunna lie. but recently i dont know whats come over me. first i sell my raptor, then i buy an 86 trx250r, now i got a cr500. i justify buying the hondas because the 250r and the cr500 are probably the baddest hondas ever made. but this thing has really changed my outlook on dirtbikes, ive always prefered quads but now i think id rather ride the 500.

its a '96 with a '99 motor that has been borred out, reeds, full FMF Gnarly pipe, and full rebuild with receipts for rod, crank bearings, etc I got it for $1500 last thursday and im loving it. i do have some issues with the bike that ill be posting in the tech section. for 1 i am running rich, and 2 i want to look into the decompression valve or possibly the fly wheel weight because its a mofo to kick. Also Im thinking about building an AF but not sure yet

heres some pics.....

Howdy John and welcome. Good looking bike! If the guy spent near as much time maintaining the internals as he did the rest of the bike, I'd say you got a great deal. Glad you got your starting issues sorted out.

well i dont have the starting issues worked out quite yet, it wants to flood for some reason and i dont think im doing anything wrong. im pulling the carb off today and should have this problem worked out by tonight.

i know im running rich, that would be the pilot jet right? i should pick up some of those at the honda dealership today and try them while i got the carb apart, hopefully they will have them in stock.

i should probably get a bunch, what size should i be looking for?

Thanks for signing up John....

Starting technique is way more important than anything else.

Stoffers is about the size of the average 13 year old.... Jay Lewis's boy is 11...

Both start 500's quite easily.

Once you get it down, starting is a piece of cake.

With any "new" bike, this site reccomends the following.

1. Pull reed block to examine intake side of piston skirt for cracks. Its quite common...

2. Do a compression test ( anything over #130 is fine. )

3. Drain tranny, flush , and refill with 15 / 40 motor oil

4. Buy some decent protective gear, your going to be needing it!

5. Most importantly..HAVE SOME FUN!

thanks for the welcome

you say to put motor oil in the tranny? i was planning on using ATF

Motor oil is better for the gears and bearings.

ATF is better for the clutch.

The Clutch is far easier to replace than the Hardparts.....

Do you think your float level may be set too high? I know you said you had to turn the bike over and dump some fuel out.

As far as running rich, do you think it is only on the bottom end or both bottom and top end of the RPM range? You probably should check to see what jets you currently have and maybe go down one size on the pilot (low speed) if rich at idle. Before you replace the jet though, you may try adjusting the air screw on the side of the carb.

If you believe the top end is rich also; if it's not all of the way down, you can drop the needle in the slide to lean out the main before replacing the jet. Lean out = move the clip up closer to the top position of the needle.

It's kinda hard to give you specific jet numbers because of the mods on your bike and altitude both affect this number. When replacing jets, be sure to use Keihin brand jets and not aftermarket.

Welcome mano,

After a while it will become painful to watch quad riders get beat up in the dunes. But hey if your young, its not noticed.
