From it's Wiki entry----The USAF has had B-52s in active service since 1955, initially with the Strategic Air Command (SAC), with all aircraft later absorbed into the Air Combat Command (ACC) following SAC's disestablishment in 1992. Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs have kept the B-52 in service despite proposals to replace it with the Mach 3 XB-70 Valkyrie, supersonic B-1B Lancer and stealthy B-2 Spirit. In January 2005, the B-52 became the second aircraft, after the English Electric Canberra, to mark 50 years of continuous service with its original primary operator.

It amazes me that this old bird is still going after this long and still a primary weapon

The "Newest" one was born exactly 1 year before me.... Oct. 1962 and is scheduled to remain in service until 2040...... probably after I'm worm food.

Incredible.

I wonder how much of the plane is still original? Probably only parts of the airframe?

Here's a shot of some Standard Missiles beig launched from the MK41 Vertical Launching Systems (VLS) on three DDG's. That's a Cruiser in the left side background. The VLS can support multi warfare / various missile variants to meet just about any threat out there.

I would go back and work this plane in a heartbeat. Out of all the airframes I have worked, this is my favorite.... I talked to a GE rep this past weekend. They are SLEP'ing the TF-34 motor so this plane is not going anywhere for a while.

The thing that amazed me one day while look inside the wheel well, was considering these were in production in 1957, the year I was born, and looking at all the fasteners that hold everything together, most are the same today as they were then.

same as seeing an original 57 chevy driving arround. Even tho not much of the new cars will rust, i doubt you'll see anything in the 08 chevy lineup stil driving in 2060

There was a mentality of genius to biuld things that would last, thats been forgotten in the hunt of $
