Best Way to Hold Piston / Crank in Place

I have heard of ways to hold the crank / piston in place when doing things such as removing FWWs. I was wondering what methods you guys prefer and use on a regular basis?

I forgot to mention the cylinder and head is on the engine.

1. Air powered impact.
2. Cut piece of rope fed into plug hole. Becareful rope doesn't get lodged into a port.

Impact, again.....


The "Down and dirty" method is to put it in gear, and lay a rod across the swingarm, and through the sprocket ( NOT THE SPOKES!) to keep things from turning...

Ok I was kinda afraid of putting that tension on the gears but if this is common practice then fine - my motor is out of the frame but I could do the same with chain around the sprocket - held in place.

If the motor is out, a piece of wood dowel stuffed in the intake port will work.

This is a ghetto way but it works...

Stick a screwdriver through one of the holes in the flywheel and wedge it against the backing plate, as long as you are careful not to pinch any wires or hit the coils its all good.

Cool - this is a nice easy method and of course wood will not damage piston / ports.

A good quality 1/2" electric impact works great too.

i install flywheel very last with torque wrench and red loctite, when motor is securely fastened in the motor mounts so it aint flopping around on a work bench. then i use a sprocket holding tool or bar through the sprocket.

Thats how I cracked the case,of my Baja bug motor, when I had to change, a leaky crank seal.

Be very carefull.

Plan ahead if possible, if the cases need to be split loosen all four before even taking the chain off. Flywheel, sproket, crank gear and clutch nut with an impact. :wink:

If your primary gear is exposed you can put a penny between the gears to stop them from going either way.

Using a hunk of wood is perectly acceptable.

Using miles of filler wire to fill a poor fitting joint isnt.
