My new to me 1996 CR500R

I bought this bike in running condition on 11/24/08 for $1200 from a guy in Reno Nevada who was 50 years old! He said he did not ride it much, and that he was the second owner. He bought it some years ago from his boss who had it titled & plated for the street in NV. The bike came with a lighting coil/cover/harness installed, and all the other parts in a box (headlight etc.). I do not plan on trying to plate it here in Ca. since it probably would not fly anyhow so those parts will get sold off to help out the parts fund!
The picture was taken as soon as I got home from picking it up.
My two other bikes in the background 06CRF450 my race bike, and my 06 400DRZs for hitting the pavement & trails.
I should note this is exactly how I bought this thing.....the guy did not wash it or anything. I think he could have got a couple hundred more if he did since it cleaned up nicely prior to tearing it apart!

Bob,
It looks just like the E-line however on the cover it says Honda but is a very weak/faint resemblance of a factory Honda logo. I'll take pictures of it, and post them up. The rest of the kit apparently was from Baja Designs, and seems all there other than the headlight switch being broken off.
As far as making it an AF I have decided that I am going to keep it a steelie since I actually thought it rode & handled pretty well. This comparing it to my 06 CRF450.

As I wrote before I picked up the bike on 11/24/08, and the next day rode it on all the local stuff from my house. I liked the bike a lot, and knew it was time for the old bike to get some much needed attention! The bike overall was in ok shape but really seemed to be neglected as far as maintenance goes. The other thing was that the older guy who owned must have enjoyed crashing because it had a cracked clutch cover, seriously dented up pipe, and numerous other things that in general needed fixing.
On 11/25/08 I started tearing the bike down for a complete overhaul. Right off the start before doing much else I welded the clutch cover up (magnesium), smoothed it with 3m pads, and finally painted it. I also straightened the foot pegs....they were thrashed but came out virtually like new!
Once the bike was completely disassembled I sent the cylinder off to Glen @ GSS for a bore & hone, and a new piston (sent 12/5 back to me today 12/12). During that time I stripped the frame, and have since painted it. It is a black metallic PPG Omni single stage with PPG DP-40 epoxy primer underneath. I usually have a few different paints around but had only limited in black so I added part metallic green to the black hence the color. Pictures below enjoy!

Suspension due for an oil change, and new fork seals/oil in the front.
For anybody who is curious changing the oil in the rear shock is VERY easy. Main thing is having the nitrogen tank & reg (+-200ish)

New Pro wheel rim, and Maxxis Desert IT tire. This was the first time I had ever laced up a MC wheel (I used to build MTB, and road bike wheels for a living), and although it took a bit of time it was easier to lace up & true compared to all of the bicycle wheels I have done! I also would have liked to have found an old school excel rim that would accept OEM spokes but none were to be had in a 21".

I would like to thank Mike publicly for making a trade that I swear was WAY more in my favor than his. The pipe, silencer, and stator cover are all parts that Mike sent me........thanks again Mike!!!! Definitely a stand up guy, and I will pass business on to you whenever I can.

For those who may want to know what it cost me in parts only (includes the OEM service manual) down below is a complete list including a grand total at the bottom. The pictures I have taken do not do the bike justice in my opinion as the thing looks (aside from the original tank) like new! I went through everything, and if it needed attention it gave it some!
