1991 CR 500 / 1996 CR 250 Hybrid (have FEW MORE picture)

Post by Iceman »

It a steely modification, I don’t know where to post it.
I will probably get my balls busted for this. But here it goes.
I have a 1991 CR500 that was sitting there waiting for a cheap AF donor.
No cheap donors in Canada, anything under $3000 is a POS (usually around $2000)

So, for Ice-racing this year I decided to take some old CR250 parts and fab them on the 500. Subframe, airbox, seat, side plates, tank, rad shouds. The plan is to narrow this bike up. Between myself and a couple of guys I use to motocross with we came up with a complete list of parts, ebay sub-frame ($25).

This weekend I installed
-Subframe (had to trim the top subframe mount on 500 frame)
-airbox, used the 500 boot
-new seat cover
-made bracket for muffler
-installed new Polisport rear fender and side plates (plastic is not as good as the ACERBIS stuff I use to run)
Total time so far 2-2.5 hrs and the subfame didn’t need any cutting, just some tweaking with a rubber hammer. And it looks/feels like a 92-96 CR250 by sitting on it.

This week I will try to heat the tank and get it to fit. Rad shouds, put FMF fatty on and EGT.

Also I am planning on using the stock CR500 radiators, the rad shouds will not cover them, but I don’t care if they hang out the bottom a couple of inches.

I was originally going to cut the frame and tighten up the fork angle, but will wait until I get out on the ice and see how she handles

I will post some pics tonite if any one is interested.

Spokane is only about 100 miles from me. I have been watching that 450 with the blown motor for a while. The price started at 1200 and the next day it was up to what it is now. I'll wait for a week or so then offer him 500. It's been on here for a while. Just missed a 1991 CR500 in a box yesterday for 250 complete!

Pls post up some different angled shots. Would like to see the finished bike...I know someone who wants to do the same thing.
The CR500 is an acquired taste. If you don't like it, acquire some taste...

Really haven't worked on the bike since xmas (the better half was in the hospital) No ice-racing this year, need to get the house healthy again.
Anyways, got the tank melted and mounted, new fuel line, took the 250 seat apart and it may have to trim the foam to get the seat cover to fit correctly. Hopefully done soon. ICEMAN

I used a 95or 96 subframe
Airbox is 92 to 94 ish
Sub frame needed minimal bending to get it to work.
Seat fits OK. I need to re-cover it (Seat bends up at the tank and wrinkles the cover)
Been riding this one all winter and love it. This thing is a blast on the ice. I have a 05 KTM 525 set up for the ice as well and took it out twice. KTM is parked.
Currently putting a 500 in a 02 450 frame. My co-worker/guy with the tig is in Thiland at a kick boxing camp unti April 7th. I need him for welding the new frame.
