My 3 year old wants a bike for Christmas. He's never been on one but rides the crap out of his power wheels quad and gator, as well as his bike with training wheels. What age did you guys let your kids get on a real bike? I'm looking at pw50's with a training bar.

I'm worried about seat height and coordination. I was thinking 5 years old myself.

One of the guys that I ride with started his boy when he was 3 and a half or a little older. Hes done great so far just turned 4 and has been tearing it up also on a PW50 with the training wheels.

I think it has a lot to do with the kid. The one I'm referring too had also rode the crap out of his power wheels and pedal bike. Could often been seen kicking the power wheels quad when it wouldn't climb the little hill on the kiddie track

That throttle screw does do wonders you can slow them down pretty good so there's not much chance they can get away from you. I've rode with them quite a bit and the only problem I've seen is that the levers where a little far out and hard to reach for the little guys hands. His dad spent some time teaching him to let off the throttle and re-grip so he could reach them. He stops just fine now.

Also a big part of it was starting him out in a small flat environment where there's nothing scary for the kid (or the parent to watch out for)
They have since taken the throttle screw out but won't let him take the training wheels off until he can ride the pedal bike without them too. I think he did this with his older son and it work really well. Hes moved up to a polini 50 and is doing great.

Best of luck, I wish I started at that age I'm sure I'd be faster now if I had.

Edit: The seat height really wasn't bad for him either just had to spend a little time explaining the brakes. But they catch on really quick :D

When my boy could hold it up, lean it over 45 degrees, and right it..... Thats when he rode.

My youngest boy was 3 when he started riding. He was actually riding a bicycle without training wheels then also.
To be honest, the PW's are great first bikes. I took the throttle stop out and the restrictor in the pipe also. Believe it or not, the bike is easier for a kid to ride with both removed. We went to a flat field and I tied a rope to the subframe bar behind the seat and would run behind them. If they panic or forget how to break, you just pull on the rope to slow them down. It worked really well for us.
Once they get used to it, put the rear gears out of a QT50 in it- makes a huge difference. Mike (97AF) hooked me up with that one.

wicked man! i wish i had pics of my Z50!! that was my first bike, i was 3 years old and i remember taking huge tree stumps and putting a nice plank on it and getting some wicked air! haha i remember bottoming out everytime i jumped it. What a killer bike that thing was, mine had the chopper bars on it though. I would love to have one right now and ride it with all the boys who have their new crf50's...the z50 would be so cool to have.
