I have access to "1" HRC trans some of you call it a Madman or a Baja Designs kit those companies bought them repacked them and sold them as their own they are "NOS" HRC components and haven't been produced in 20 years. They are not overdrive transmissions they are wide ratio gears. $822.00 plus shipping and handling call me if your serious at 805 306-9840 don't bother posting just call. That's my cost on the gear set so don't bother asking me if I'll take less you'll be wasting both of our time.

Hey Mike, just curious about these wide ratio gears. Is there any info available on them anywhere ? Was told recently that for an OZ desert race wide ratio gearbox's were used in the 500's by a shop in Alice Springs but havent looked into it yet.Wondering if this might be the same gears they used.

As far as I know HRC is the only one who produced them. I heard recently from someone that IMS tried producing them years ago but, I'm sure they tried buying "NOS" as well. I have a really good friend who owns a gear house here in Socal and I'll ask him how much to reverse Engineer a few sets but, I'm sure it won't be worth my time and once it's gone there won't be anything to reverse Engineer.

The stock cr250, & cr500 Ratios are:
1st: 1.8 2nd: 1.47 3rd: 1.235 4th: 1.05
5th: .909
The new Madman ratios are:
1st: 1.8 2nd: 1.47 3rd: 1.1
4th: .909 5th: .75
Madman 4th is the same as OEM 5th.
Madman 5th is clearly a overdrive.

When people say overdrive this is what I think of.
In the days before automatic transmissions were common, especially in the 1950s, many rear-wheel drive American cars were available with an overdrive option. Borg Warner provided the box that was factory-installed between the engine and a foreshortened driveshaft. Since the overdrive function, if enabled, could be shifted by simply easing up on the accelerator without depressing the clutch pedal, the action was much like a semi-automatic. Also, an electrically operated solenoid would deactivate the unit via a switch under the accelerator pedal providing the equivalent of the kickdown of the automatic. A knob connected to a Bowden cable, similar to some emergency brake applications, was also provided to lock out the unit mechanically. Using overdrive with the main 3-speed transmission in 2nd gear was similar in ratio to 3rd gear, and with the main transmission in 3rd, the overall ratio was fractional (i.e., "true overdrive").
Such add-on overdrive boxes were available from the 1930s to the 1970s for cars and light trucks, and today are used mainly to provide the extra gearing required in heavy trucks.

Martin at Madman Engineering told me there are 6 gears in his kit and that they are "NOS" HRC components so I'm going by what he said regarding the kits he use to sell calling them Madman kits and he doesn't call them "Overdrive" gear sets either he sells them as "Wide ratio Gears"

My IMS Wide Ratio Gear Set:
Madman ratio (in accordance to her site
MadMan) and the picture above:
3eme: 20+22 = R 1.100
4eme: 22+20 = R 0.909
5eme: 24+18 = R 0.750
Mine IMS:
3eme: 21+23 = R 1,095
4eme: 23+20 = R 0,869
5eme: 25+18 = R = 0.720
The IMS is clearly longer than the madman...
Would anyone ave ratio of original HRC and BajaDesign wide ratio gear set?
