X-mas shopping... Seth's first bike

so I've been trying to determin if I should get him a quad or a bike...

the mother in law took him to the pumpkin patch the other day and they had a little track with some chinese off brand qwads. Seth hopped right on and mobbed the thing

. My mother in law had to keep giving the guy money because Seth wouldn't get off it! So my mother in law tells me about it and shows me pics and now I have determined that he needs an upgrade from his powerwheels.

Talking to everyone, I'm getting about half tell me to start him on a bike w/ training wheels and another half telling my to start him on the qwad so he'll actually ride it.

well, qwads are pricey (I'm not buying ching wan ching crap) so I'm looking around and I find this:

nah start him young on a bike. if he was killing the quad it will be no time before he out grows it. at least if he gets a bike the learning curve is a bit steeper and has more room to grow on it. next thing ya know your 5hundy will be gone out of the garage. haha

ya, my first real bike I got when I was 18, got a free bike when I was 16, but never really got it running right, turns out it was seized with some ring peiced imbedded in the head... no wonder it didn't run right

I had a go-cart when I was like 9, but my dad couldn't put down the beer, coke and whores long enough to get me a shitty bike

trips to indonesia and the philipenes to do all sorts of nasty stuff was a bigger priority to him

anyway, yeah, I like the JRs and PWs. I'd like to get him a CRF, but its hard to find a stock one, they are larger than the others and all the dumbass mini riders keep the resale on them super high. Not that I can even aford $650, but I can make shit happen for my boy

good on ya danny. i think that little thing will be perfect. by the time he outgrows that he better be riding red or i will be seriously dissapointed in you.

i agree about the crf50's the price is high but they are fun even for adults. haha we went out on your supermots a few months back to this old gocart track that is no longer used. and my buddy brought his fiddy. mell my bike sat all day and i slutted the shit out of the 50. lol i think your son will be soo stoked!!!

well, I also want to get something of quality that will last a while becasue Jonny is almost exactly 3 years younger, so I'm hoping that when Seth is ready for something larger, Jonny will be ready to start riding

I kinda feel bad doing the hand-me-down thing, but I think its different with something as expensive as a bike.

ok, so the wife says "when he can pick it up" well, he is a strong boy, so I think we will have to go by the dealer and test that strength

I need to pickup a fuel filter for the cb this weekend... I think thats a good excuse..

Sweet. That's how old I was when I got my JR50. There's no way I would give up those memories of riding with my dad for anything.

get the bike danny!! he will enjoy it (he'll be thinking, look just like dads)and when he moves up your other kid can use it. Dont worry about the hand me down, i am sure that you can "redo" it cheap (paint, seat cover, etc) and he wont believe its the same bike because it will look "new".

Same deal on MC here, had to move out and buy one myself at 20, now im living my second childhood, wouldnt have been so bad if all my friends didnt ride when i was a kid they all had 50's and 80's, i still remember riding my bmx after them to all the different tracks by our house and making dirt bike sounds :-)

The PW50 weighs less, and has a lower seat height.... Its tough to beat.

I am in the same boat with all the foster kids we have had they have all been 3-5 yrs old. I am leaning towards a 50 quad or if I can find one a 50cc hammerhead twister kart.

I am in a simillar place with my boy. He's 3. But I think it's best to start them on the bike. It takes more work, but they seem less apt to get bored with it the way they might with a quad. The only reason I say that is because I have friends who started their kids on quads and wound up selling them and getting bikes. I see PW50's on Craigs list for any where from $300 and up. But what ever way you go, that's cool for you kids Christmas present man.

a guy I work with has a friend with a bombardier 50 2 stroke qwad that they can't get running right

I might be able to get the thing for next to nothing. I don't know, I'm just gonna go for whatever comes my way that I can actually afford.

Go for a PW they are a great little bike smaller and lighter than that Suzuki.
I rebuilt one for my supervisor last winter super easy to work on they last forever and with the training wheels they are just as stable as a quad. But you can take them off once they get better where as with a quad you can't change much.
He just started his 3 and 1/2 year old on it and he loves it. Also the throttle limiting screw on the PW's is a nice feature so they don't scare themselves if they are just learning.

Worn out scored up piston. Yes its sitting on 500 piston!

ya, I like the PWs for him, they are real small and easy to ride.
Mike has a crf50 we're talking about, and I'm waiting to hear if Bob is willing to part with his boy's old PW.
I think the crf will be a bit much, but it would last longer until he would need to upgrade to a 70, but the PW would be better to start out on.

MY BOY STARTED ON A PW50 WITH TRAINING WHEELS. TOOK THE TRAINING WHEELS OFF AND STARTED RACING. HE MOVED UP TO A TTR50 FOR THE PITBIKE CLASS AND IS NOW READY FOR A 65. THE PW WAS ROCK SOLID RELIIABLE THE TTR HAS EATEN A COUPLE BATTERIES.
