I just drove it home, the mileage readout read this most of the way.... It dropped down in some hills and headwinds.

The hard numbers?

397 miles x 19.9 gallons...

19.94 mpg ( 100% freeway @ 68mph)

How much could a lowered, 2wd, tuned Duramax get?

Very cool Bob.
I'm not a diesel guy but I bet there are a few mods that would make the mileage even better.

I'm not real familiar with diesels...but is 20mpg really good? I thought they got better mileage than that running such low rpm. My truck gets 20 mpg running 2200rpm @ 70 mph. And my truck is also 2WD...I know it's lifted and shit too  Wind resistance is a bitch for sure. Doing just five more MPH on the freeway costs me 2-3 mpg. 70mph is definately optimum cruising speed for my truck. Bob what's your Duramax turn at freeway speeds? 1200-1500?

Oh duh I just looked at your pic again. Now I'm thinking, how in the hell does your truck turn more rpm at lower speeds than my truck :?: You must have some really low tow / haul gears in that bad boy :!:

I saw that Mike thanks

That just seems a little odd to me?? I have driven a couple manual trans Ford diesels before and they just idled down the road. I'm looking at Bob's pic and it seems to me he's darn near screaming it's guts out. And only doing 68 mph. I see it's an automatic, I guess GM's transmissions work a lot differently than Fords do huh? It's a diesel, can you gear that sucker up and still pull a good sized load?

thats right on par for a dmax.. anywhere from 1800-2k depending if the converter is locked up or not. :D

The most your gonna gain from gears is about 3mpg 1700 is about as low as you wanna go. A boost gauge is a huge help in getting better economy. If you can keep off the turbo you will see better mileage, its as simple as that.

That's a big difference with today's gas prices!! What I'm paying in premium fuel right now that would save me $14 dollars at the pump...a week. When I went to 4.56s from the OEM 3.92s my hwy miles oddly remained the same but my city mileage went up 2 mpg. My small block V-8 doesn't have the grunt yours do to pull tall gears :(

32?! :bsmeter:

The overhead lie-o-meter does just that...lie. I have an 03 Excursion 7.3 with lotsa mods and rarely get 25ish hwy doing 70, empty. Towing is more like 15-17 at best - I tow a 28' 10k lb WW. Still waay better than a gasser. Only if those asshats would lower the cost of diesel to below gas where it belongs. Oil below $90/barrel today. WTF?? Gas should be under $3/Gal - what gives? Sorry for the small rant.
