I got my new tranny bearings yesterday,I know I can use the heat/freeze method for putting the new ones in but how do you guys get the old ones out without a puller?

I could be a smartass and say just drive em through the case with a hammer but wont

If your a good welder, weld a bead around the edge of the bearing.

It will shrink the bearing, and it will just fall out.

NEVER REMOVE / INSTALL THE BEARING BY JUST BEATING ON THEM

The interference fit is crutical to long life. If the bearing spins, the motor is junk in a short amount of time.

Heating the cases, and "Dry Icing" the bearings works awesome to install.

I just leave the bearings in the freezer in the beer fridge over night before assembly.

Does the bearing shrink ? Or does the heat transfer to the case and the case expand?

When I split my 86 cases a couple days ago the 2 smaller bearings on the tranny shafts just fell out so I guess those cases are junk eh?

na, those 2 smaller ones aren't a press fit. this is a good thing since one doesn't have access from behind.
every pair of cases I have split has had those just fall out.

The ones on my 87 cases are not just falling out, mind you I havn't really tried to take them out yet,I just tugged a bit with my finger and they didn't move so I figured they were press fit also

The weld shrinks when it cools and pulls the bearing with it, only try this if you know how to weld

It shrinks as the weld cools. You can come back after a hour, and the bearing will still fall out.

ALL the bearings in the bottom end are "supposed" to have interference fit, with the exception of 1 bearing in the right case, and 1 bearing in the left case...these 2 bearings have a tab that holds them in place but they too should have a near 0 tolerance fit. other than the 2 "tabbed" bearings, if ANY of the others just fell out you better fix that, other wise they will spin and fuk up the bore. actually if they just fell out that means they already have started to spin. to get those bearings out you need a blind bearing puller to get behind the bearing....rather than dropping huge cash on a qaulity bearing puller set i had my buddy at the dealer pull mine with his pullers (he charged me around $30 to remove all bearings including the 2 small clutch rod bearings which are a bitch to get in and out). $30 was pocket change since ill probly never have to replace any more bottom end bearings again in my life time. you could try the stove trick like others have mentioned, ive never done that to remove bearings so i cant comment on how well it works

on a side note: i would be very cautios when heating the cases. a map gas torch can and will waaaay over heat the case if your not carefull

I wouldn't heat with a torch. get it in the oven and keep checking it.

How can you fix the bearing from falling out? the welding trick?

i think bearing driver and press (with alittle heat) is the best way but not everyone has access to those tools, including myself. i used map gas/freezer to install all mine and it works fine but use common sense when using that hot of a torch. couple ways of keeping the bearings in there, provided the bore isnt wallered out....loctite has stuff like thread locker but its for bearings, i used a different method that worked good also

yup impact driver, and if i remeber correct honda puts loctitie on those screws so they will be a bitch to get out. and whatever you do becareful you dont strip out the philips head with that impact driver or youll have alot more work getting stripped screws out

I've got a jetwash at the shop, its like a giant dishwasher. That sucker will heat the casses and clean the paint from them in one shot, if I'm lucky the bearings have fallen out before I take it from the wash. Same to put them back together, I do like running my crankbearings on the edge of beeing loose. Loose is fast!

I would not rely solely on Loctite with loose bearings. All you have to do is swedge them. Remember heat and oil trash Loctite...

Still havn't got those screws off for those retainers,I did discover that my cordless drill doubles as a Impacter but still no go,should I try heating the bearing with a torch to heat the area around those screws then go at it with the impacter?
