monday it gets the welding (by a pro, no bird crap welds on my AF). Then I'm going to polish the whole frame. I prefer the bare look, but the last owner polished the main spars and the swingarm, so I might as well finish the job.Ported&Polished wrote:That looks just awesome! What more could you ask for. Some welding and stuff later, and you'll be riding it!
I got lucky, the last guy replaced all of the bearings on the chassis last year when he rebuilt the motor and had it all done by the stealer.
so, I'm almost there!
That bolt isn't long enough, so it looks like I will be making the drive up to nevada bolt to get the proper bolt, and if they have any that look really good and oem like, I might buy enough to include one with each kit.

NICE!AlisoBob wrote:Stoffers told me he converted his '03 ( I think) in 7 hours from a running 250 to running 500.
He bought it new, only had it a few weeks before he did the conversion. Sold the motor for $1k..... that = $5.5k roller....
does he have a lathe and mill and tig welder?
I spend 7 hours in just mock ups and chassis maintenance stuff!

so you guys know, any motor '85-'01 will fit. the '88 and older need the rear bushings bored out (or like me replaced with the bushings from the 250 donor). The '85-'86 coil bolts directly and doesn't need the adaptor (same bolt pattern as the 250 coil) and the head stay bolt holes have enough play to also fit the short rod motors. its tight, but works.

Craigs list is the best place to find cheap bikes which the owners don't know the value of.Ported&Polished wrote:I think we need a constantly updated list of 97 up 250's available. Please list any you find, that way when the great deals come up, we will know where to look. I looked on fleabay today and found some but no great deals.
I got my '97 off craigs list, the guy was asking $1000, and when I called him he said some guy offered him $500, so I showed up an hour later with $900 cash.

the coil. That bracket allows you to use your 500 coil.Ported&Polished wrote:So the only welding needed for the conversion is the two motor mounts and a pipe mount relocation? What is the big piece on the side of the frame with two bolt holes for? I understand what the spacers on the swingarm do.

The machine shop started monday, I had them make some minor changes, so they should be PERFECT.lewisclan wrote:
Danny when can you send me a set, did you get the right lenght bolts yet ?
I just came back from nevada bolt and got some bolts. Its like pulling teeth to find anything metric. its a 170mm, so it will be a little long, they didn't ahve a 160 and its black grade 10.9 and I got matching nuts and washers. I would have bought enough for all the kits, but at $4.10 ea I don't have the money right now. I will get my motor installed tonight and get some pics for you.
The kit ETA next week sometime.
When I hear the actual day, I will let you know. but even figuring in shipping time, etc. you should have them within 2 weeks.
