Helmet Cam

Post by MojoScojo »

I got a new helmet camera. It's a Samsung SC-X300L. VERY COOL!
Details here:

The thing is everything I wanted in a helmet camera setup. It records in 720p!!!!! and only cost $400. :yikes:
Here's a sample video.

Of course youtube butchered it.

I uploaded to photobucket too. They butchered it as well, but not as bad.

I need to put the original somewhere so you guys can see how good the quality really is.

Battery life is fricken amazing! I recorded 2 hours at 720x480 and only used half the battery. The helmet cam is also powered through the camera itself. There's an easy remote on the cable to the helmet cam that allows you to turn the whole deal on/off and start/stop recordings. Very easy, no muss no fuss. The lens on the helmet cam is 180 degrees adjustable so when you mount it, you can quickly correct the horizon.

Only downsides so far, I think the microphone needs a bit better protection from wind noise over about 10mph. I'll see what I can rig up though. The included mounting band doesn't really work too well. I need to rig up a plate with some industrial velcro so I don't have to worry about the band at all.

Both items are easily fixable IMHO.

I'm psyched!

I'm putting up the original temporarily.
You can download it here: http://bannedcr500riders.com/temp/playground.avi
(Right click and "Save Target As")
It's a 14.6 Meg file.

If you download it and can't watch it, download and install this:

The camera has 1Gig built in I believe. But I picked up a 4Gig SD.

The external camera has a cable that's about 5 feet long and has a special connector that just plugs in like headphones. It is prorietary to match the camera.

I had a hunch that one would give ol Rosco "wood". Yes, there is that, and a quite a bit more. There is however, more jeep trail riding required to get to those kinds of trails. Check this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNe0JUsJyh8

I've just been informed, this link doesn't work directly. :(

Click it anyway, then click "Downloads" on the left. Scroll down a bit and click "Codecs". Then click "Xvid 1.1".

I just passed my Air Force annual Fitness Test....they make it harder each year, more and more like the Army and Marines. I ran 1.5 miles in 12:12 (humidity knock's the wind out of me), 46 pushups and 39 crunches in a minute~timed...I suck, but I passed. I am going to continue to work out to improve...so you cant beat on me as bad. It should help my riding also.

Hey Mojo - I picked one of these and got some footage this last weekend. It came with VideoStudio and I've used it to clip out some of the better parts. Only thing I having problems with is figuring out how to save the clips as something other than the .VSP format that requires VideoStudio to look at (mpg, avi, or something compatible with Windows Media Player).
Also, I had to load a Codec off of one of the CD's to view the raw avi files with WMP. Do you use some other editing software? I'm still digging through information but don't see what I'm looking for to do the file conversions. Any suggestions or if you could point me to a resource where I might find an answer would be greatly appreciated.

Last thing - do you attach the camera to your goggle strap or mount it directly on your helmet? I need to get the camera pointed more upwards; got a lot of front fender and trail directly in front of the front tire - need more horizon.

Thanks,

Jay

JBird, I used the video studio to do the one "Buttstompin!" vid. Cool, but too much work for my lazy butt. I don't remember the command to create the actual .avi file, but it's not the standard "File, Save". The help files had the answer though.

What I do now is also a bit confusing to set up initially, but works really slick for simple edits and dumping to youtube. I use VirtualDub to clip out the crap. In order to get that to work, I had to find a VFW codec that works with VirtualDub and that Samsung stuff. I think it was FFDShow. I'll look through my stuff and find links for you when I get more than a few minutes. VirtualDub is also not very intuitive, but is quick and dirty.

After I edit the garbage and make clips < 10 minutes, I convert it to FLV using BitComet FLV converter. Youtube limits you to 10 minutes and 100 MB per vid. This way, I can get the maximum length vids under 100MB. This piece is very simple.
http://www.bitcomet.com/tools/flvconverter/index.htm
http://www.bitcomet.com/tools/flvplayer/index.htm

Again, what i do is a PITA to set up, but quick n dirty once it is.

I bought some "Industrial Velcro" and just stick it to the side of my helmet. I had to zipty a flat piece of plastic to the helmet cam mount to stick the velcro to. I should post a picture of that.

Anxious to see the footage!

THANKS! I figured you probably had a better way. This is my first time playing with video and, even though I've been doing IT for over 25 years, I feel like a puppy. :notworthy:

seriously...how many IT guys are on this site???
BTW, I like that cam setup, I have a canon elura100 that I wanted to hook a bullet cam and microphone to it, but thats so much wiring and betteries and my wife would whoop my ass if I busted up our camera that I paid over $500 for last year...
when I get some spare $$$ I might want to get a similar setup.
