I recently bought an aftermarket gasket kit for the 500 (should have gone genuine i know). I am wondering though, should the cylinder base gasket be a metal gasket the same as the head gasket? What do you get in a geniune kit? Also, i gotta get new piston and rings, iv seen a couple of brands like wiesco, vortex and pro x but any suggestions what i should go with for value for money being that they seem to vary in price a bit?
Thanks.

I run cast , if you put them next to each other the vertex has a much better finish than the prox.

the wiseco gaskets are cometic. I find the cometic topend gasket sets on ebay for like $17 all the time, so I always have an extra. The cometic base gasket is a metal shim style.

Yep, what Danny said. The Cometic sets have the steel shim base gasket, don't leave home without it.

Should anyone happen to get one of those K&S kits off ebay don't use the base gasket. Its a fiber materal and will leak soon after.

Oh the ones made in China ?

for $32 a pair.
There's a lot of hours on those @ 50:1 and holding up so far. Man I got like 25 races on those 35-40 track practices and who knows how many free rides.
I guess not everything from there is crap. I just don't like supporting them

I learned the hard way... have a k&s base gasket blow out on both sides, and had some "boss" main bearings crumble!

the balls fell to peices and bounced around

and the seals that came with them sucked. as far as K&S goes, the center case and side cover gaskets hold up fine, just the base gasket is too weak and blows out. The k&s seals are junk.
I only use honda bearings and seals now, whichever gaskets I've got for the bottomend, and cometic for the topend

OEM only for me. I find that if you use the friggin TORQUE ADAPTER and TORQUE the jug PROPERLY base gaskets dont blow out. To many people think they have a better "feel" then a torque wrench and are too cheap to buy the $15 Motion pro tool.

Remember to clean and lube any threads you are torq'n to make sure you get even accurate numbers...

BAH! torque wrenches are for pussies!
the one base gasket I blew out was the result of a combination of a weak gasket and no loc-tite on my studs. Now I loc-tite my cylinder studs and haven't had a problem since. I just like the cometic gasket design.
