Wiggle the wheels, swing-arm, steering stem and any other bearing mounted parts to check for play. If they will let you pull the pipe take a look in the exhaust-port. Even better look in the intake side and check for cracks on the piston skirt. Other than that just basic stuff listen to it run ride it if you can shift through all the gears. Ask the owner about maintenance or mods hes done.

Just assume its needs a new top end and deduct for that. Unless the bike looks to be in near mint condition. Not likely the intake can come off. Ask if its ever been bored with new piston. Look at the rear sprocket, is it a stocker? look for wearon it, that is a good indication of how much time is on it and how well the owner maintained it.

The best indicator is the brake rotors.... nobody ever changes those...
If their really worn, the bikes hammered..

It's harder to tell a bad deal from a really good deal.
If it's got all the original stuff (plastics, decals) and shows little wear, your almost sure to get a good deal. Ive run across bikes with the original tires on them.
It is a lot harder to tell if a well used bike has been maintained properly.
