i called the guy and he said he bought it a few years back. rode it for a bit then gave it to his day. then he pulled the motor to drop in a quad. i asked him when was the top end done and he said he has never touched anything. i figure i needs a complete rebuild. what should i offer the guy? i asked him what he was looking to get and he said he had an offer for 600 but to call him monday to see if it sells. i think he made that up to see if i would offer more. of course i didnt. after i didnt make an offer he kept telling me to call monday because the "guy" might flake out. haha

budget in is possibility of a complete rebuild (probably $300-$500)
To me, I would never pay a penny over $1000 for a perfect running and completely rebuilt 500 motor, so I will never pay more than $500 for one with a questionable history.
If you tore into it and did every bearing and seal and a topend you're looking at $400 in parts and bore, not to mentiong if it needs a crank or clutch, or the jug is at 2.0.
I'd tell him that if the guy flakes (there is no guy

) you'll give him $300 and be willing to go up to maybe $500.

i know right, but a nice tear down. powdercoat the cases new seals bearings crank cylinder and piston and all new hardware and good as new. i figure the motor as is worth about 2 hundy. thoughts

are the intake and exhaust plugged? if not, I would assume a case splitting would be in order and some new main bearings... still, I'd offer like $250 or $300. The cool thing about a beat up motor is if you get it cheap and completely rebuild it you can have some really good peice of mind when its done and probably still pay less that what the really clean motors go for on ebay.
Both of my motors got the full treatment from me, all bearings and seals right off the bat.

ya, 2 hundy sound like a decent offer. especially if the dude doesn't really know much about it. You can even be honest and tell him since its soo dirty and without a known history, you feel as though you are buying a rebuildable core, not a running motor.

look out for cracks in the bottom of the case, a plugged weep hole, stripped drain plug, JB anywhere. pull the plug and look at it. click through the gears while turning the c/s sprocket back and forth. feel if the kicker ratchets back into place well. If he'll let you, drain the oil and look at it and pull the clutch cover and check for grooves in the clutch backet. Did I foget anything?
oh, pull the stator cover and check for seal leaks, or a rusty shitty flywheel, also inspect the sprocket, it will give you a good idea of how the previous owner maintained the bike while it was running.
the more you look at and the more problems you find (even if they are a small and very easy fix) can help you get his price down.

well checked it out. first off it had a ton of dirt on it. not the kind ya wipe off. the barn kind. oil with dirt. haha the cases look good. no jb weld anywhere. case saver mount holes look ok. piston looks real good from the exhaust side. clutch cover looks good and no gouges. the kicker is screwed. wobbly as hell. it shfts nice and smooth. has oem reed cage and jp carb. they look ok. all in all it looks really nice. but hell who really knows whats going on inside. had some odd hwd here and there. the case vent hose is about half the size it should be. the shifter is a little worn. dont know if its the shifter or the shift rod. the guy really dosent know anything. he said he has the pipe and i asked him what pipe it was and he said uhhhhh dont know. and he said he would look for it. he also said he had the rads and cdi somewhere. i told him i would call him monday to see if "the other guy" bought it. so basicly im looking at a decent motor with no known history shifts ok with half a inch of grime and what appears ok cases. so i have no idea what to offer him.

Was the exhaust plugged with a rag or was it left open? I'm assuming the reeds/carb were installed... if not, was the intake plugged?
I'd be offering $250-$300, if he was hesitant, maybe up to $400

reeds amd carb were installed but the exhaust wasnt. look rather clean in there and the piston was top dead, but who knows. if i do get it ill do a complete rebuild on it anyway. but just looking for a ballpart to offer. 300 seems to be the average
