ok i was just curious about the differences in cranks. from what i think i know the 87 is the same as 90-01. the 88 and 89 are different. does anyone know why? i think danny says the 88 and 89 are lighter. also is the 86 crank the same aside from the rod being 5mm shorter. i just think it is good info to have. thanks guys

crank halves are the same dimensions from '84-'01. the halves were lighter '84-'86 (along with the shorter rod), they added some weight for '87, then went with the light halves again from '88-'89, then added some weight again for '90+
not sure if the '84-'86 haves are the same weight as the '88-'89, or even if the '87 was originally the same weight as the '90+, but they made the '87 use the same part number as '90+ for replacement.
DeWayne like the early short rod light cranks, I don't really know if the weight difference is enough to be noticable.

danny that's good shit right there. so I would assume the 87 is the same as the 90-01 due to the same part number. so the only question now is are the 89 89 cranks the same weight as the 84-86 crank halfs. obviously the 84-86 assy are gonna be lighter cause the rods are 5mm shorter.

you know what, looking at part numbers, and part numbers for crank halves, it looks like '85-'87 has the same halves, '88-'89 got new ones, then '90+ were different still... probably adding weight the whole time. They probably just stopped making the '87 crank, so they use the new part number as a replacement. just like how the CDIs changed a lot between '87 and '01, but they show the same part number for that range because a '01 CDI will work fine on a '87.
