I thought they were all the same... I guess not....

# 2 LB7
# 3 LLY
# 4 LBZ
# 5 LMM
This is a 2002, with a LB7. It this a good package to start with, or do I want something with a LBZ package?

ya, I'd go LBZ so you could be jus like Justin

Last time we took his trailer out to dumont for a day ride he smoked some old buick coming over the mountain with 5 dirtbikes and the trailer

He didn't even have to fully get on it

The guy was being a dick and thinking he wasn't going to let us in

I would go with LLY unlessssss you get a LBZ that is overheating free. Alot of the LBZ's were known to overheat and drop into limp mode. However there are still quite a few excellent ones out there.. Just make sure that its problem free.

They would have to build a much better transmission before you could ever consider that.

Some are straight 6, some are V8. Advantages?

Dodge is the only straight 6... More torque and proven design out of the box in the straight 6 in my opinion.
the 8's are powerfull but quieter and takes more to build as much power as the straight six.
If you want a dodge get an old 12v and build it up a little.. it will have just as much power if not more than the newer v8's.

The 02 Dodge V12 I had with all the goodies was still a POS and at 350hp I killed the transmission twice and the HP and Torque weren't even close to my Duaramax's which is 150hp and 300ft lbs of torque more and more than twice the mpg pulling a 8000lb trailer.

The Cummins is the best motor of the 3, but the stock Dodge auto trans is laughable. GM wins with the Allison, hands down. I've heard from multiple sources that the early Duramaxes have both head gasket and injector issues, but those pale in comparison to the disaster that is the 6L Powerstroke. I can't recommend a 6.4 or 6.0 PSD Ford to anyone.
Also- definitely buy one now, in 2010 the emissions regulations change and every diesel vehicle produced is going to have a $3000 exhaust system with urea injection/aftertreatment on it. The emissions reduction is nothing short of amazing, but the complexity increase is staggering.

LB7 mid 04 an older had issues and can be determined by the eighth digit in the VIN being a "1" stay away from that engine code is my opinion as well.

I like Dodge trucks. My 94 gas Ram has 370k with no shop time. So I got a 2001 Cummins, Big mistake. I finally got rid of it after 150k miles. Three injector pumps and lift pumps replaced and needed the fourth whan it was sold. It was also on it's third transmission. It was all stock including the exhaust. The Dodge autos are just crap.
Dodge and ford still use modified car transmissions. Dodge is based on the 727 Torqflight and the ford is still a C6 varient. When I worked ambulance we kept new Ford trans stacked like firewood in the shop. They would only last 2-3 months in the ambulances.

If I get something like this, and buget $5k for exhaust, intake, programmer, and other goodies... ...... I'll have pretty good performance?

The only problem with those is the fuel miledge, it sucks. They say it improves over time, it does, but only a tiny amount. Putting some aftermarket stuff on there will help, but compared to the Dodge and Fords, the Chevy has shitty mpg's. Other than that it's a powerfull rig, and looks good, and is comfy.

Everyone tells me mpg with the Duramax is better. Ryans buddies claim 25mpg + highway, empty.

Mine is 24 plus on 35 inch BFG's and an 8 inch lift all day long no Dodge or Ford comes close.

My partner has an 02 Dmax with The Banks Big Hoss bundle. The top power setting raised the HP to 350 and TQ to 750 at 2000 rpm. The kit runs @ $3k. With a Fabtech 8" lift and 37" tires he easily tows his H1 (also a Dmax conversion) rock crawler over the sierras and Ive seen him kill a new corvette stoplight to stoplight in town. He has had no problems with the Allison trans in the last six years either.

In my experience with all of the turbo diesels milage is 22 to 24 on the highway regardless of which brand it is. 2008 tax year the alternative fuel tax deduction is back and turbo diesels are included.

That's gotta be with a chip and air and exhaust. They get like 10 new, and 12 after break in. A Dodge will get 18 right off the showroom floor.

I have had a 1996 f250 psd, 1997 250 psd, 1997 350 psd. and am now driving a 1999 F350 crew with the psd. All 7.3 not modified. I traded a brand new 06 Dodge with 10,000 on it for my 99. The cummins motors are good, but I find they lack the punch that the International engine has, however everyone I know that has had a 6.0 liter or 6.4 liter tell me they hate them. All of the trucks except the Dodge have had manual trannies and get 20+ mpg up hill down hill, loaded unloaded what ever. The best I ever got with the dodge was 16, plus they have major tranny problems, and I have heard the same for chev right after they went with Allison, but I'm not a chevy guy. In my opinion 7.3 liter DITA engines rule the roost.
