1986 CR500 Shock needs rebuild

Where do you guys buy parts?

If you wouldn't rebuild it yourself, does anyone know who will service something this old?

If I'm at two strikes already, what are the odds of fitting a newer shock in there?

Do you know what needs rebuilt in the shock? Does it need bushings or just the fluid changed? You should be able to get the parts from honda via service honda or honda parts direct on their websites. I rebuilt the shock on my 85 last year. I got the bushing, new seal, bottoming bumper and a gold valve from race tech no problem.

If you decide not to do it yourself, I would recommend Tru-Technologies or DeWaynes Jones Suspension.

Thanks guys, I'm a little embarrassed...I assumed Honda didn't support bikes this old, my apologies.

As far as what it needs, I don't really know. Right now it's all spring and downright dangerous. I would assume it needs the standard rebuild plus maybe bushings. It's super clean, and has hardly any of the original paint worn off the frame, so it could just be seal, oil, and nitrogen. I'll dig into it pretty soon, I just bought it, and can't wait to take it out!

Thanks redrocket, I'll check them out, if they're not too pricey I may try one out.

Google isn't turning up a website for dewayne, would someone mind posting contact information for him?

So, I have the shock sitting in a box and I can't decide what to do...

The more I think about, the more I wonder if it really is blown. It has 45ish psi in the bladder, of course it could just be air for all I know. The shaft is perfect. When the shock was installed, and I bounced it up and down, I could hear the valving doing its thing. Those three things make me think it might be ok. The reason why I thought it was blown is because of how springy/bouncy/soft it is. Now I'm thinking, well the thing is 22 years old, maybe suspension just sucked back then. And maybe if I send it off for a rebuild, it would be the same.

For some of you who have owned one of this era, what do you think?

45psi ? I'm thinking that's your problem try 150psi of Nitrogen

Could it be that simple, just a recharge?

Charge it and ride it. Check the shaft for an oil leak....

I'd change the oil and then re-charge it.

You may be shocked  to see what 24 yr old shock oil looks like...

Nasty.

I rebuilt my '84's shock last winter. It's not too hard if you have a honda shop/owners manual.

I have my 92KYB apart, I'll take some pics and make a play by play. They are pretty easy and parts seem to be easy to get, either from Honda or Race Tech. From Race Tech you can get new piston ring and piston ring "O"-ring, they can get pretty loose and cause a lack of damping even if all else is good. I usually go higher on nitrogen pressure to keep the shock from sucking up air throught the seal head. I start at 175, never seemed to make it feel harsh. My 2 cents .....

Do you have a manual?
