Getting up there in price. Your thoughts on this for my 95 CR500. If someone else is bidding let me know.....I do not want to run the price up. It would be cool to know when someone off the group is bidding on something so I can know not to bid.

If you like fast open desert stuff the 89 tranny sux balls as the ratios are shorter.

That's still a decent price for Ebay, my 86 motor with a cracked piston brought $950.

it's amazing how the prices are going through the sky, I saw a 2001 stock bore go for 1050 a few moths back with all acessesories should have tried to pick it up.
89 is a good motor besides the clutch missing one plate, the ignition curve is a little more stout than the newer ones. I like the close ratio trans of the 88-92.

you did see it had a broken left case ? hard to tell how bad the damage is from the crappy pic, but broke is broke no matter how you look at it. been seeing alot of JB welded motors on ebay lately

It has a more agressive curve down low and mostly in the middle. The bike is faster than a newer style.

You just change the gearing. I was running 15 42 in the sand and the motor pulled it with no problem. These things make some serious torque and I weight 300 pounds.

No shit
My nitrous bike has an 89 bottom end and IMO for anything fast and open the ratios SUCK, if you gear it to the moon 1st is a pain in the tight stuff.
It just happens I use it for a dunes dragger and it works nicely.

Im calling BS on that, I run 14/46 and it will only pull 5th up the steep stuff while on the juice without the nitrous its 4th gear tops up comp. A stock motor with 15/42 would be useless on anything but flat sand.

a generic answer, that doesnt answer the question

. where exactly is it that you get your information from ??? ive been around a while and never seen anything that shows what the difference is in the CDI. unless you mapped it out yourself, i dont see where you could of found that information

No you are right I am in FLa in sugar sand that is flat and the bike does not like pulling in tall gears real fast like that but it will pull 1st with hardly to much clutching in tight stuff. Most guy's were amazed I could ride it in real tight stuff without stalling it but it was because all the torque. On the trail it wo.
rked fine.
No way it will pull hills with that kind of gearing in 4th and 5th you just use 3rd but like I said I am in FLA! flatlander land

Actually you are right,I just changed and swapped alot of CDI's and found the older ones seemed to be more up front.
I talked to a guy who built 500 sprint karts and he told me he found the same thing I did pre 90 were more stout in the ignition curve.
Only thing to do is start swapping the stuff out yourself and see what you come up with.

I have a two frames for biulding two bikes and i would like to get at least one of them going before the Pismo trip. It sure would be easier to get a complete running engine now and get one ready so, I can work on getting the second to Pismo also. I missed (just couldn't bid higher then $1250) for one on ebay that sounded good but, come on I think I can buy a bike running for what some of those engines are going for.

I agree totally but you better hurry it does not look good for affordable Cr 500's. It was only inevitable they replaced the CR5 with a inferior piece as far as power and reliabilty goes. Those dope heads are just now figuring it out.
You mean we have been lied to by the press and the mags.

be very cautious of buying sight un-seen from ebay. i recomend a local purchase so you can see for yourself what your buying. i dont need to go into the details of my sight un-seen purchace be heres a short version of what happened.
dude said bike was solid, just low on compression. after i already payed the money from 1000miles away this is what i found:
1- unrepairable bent radiator that leaked
2- broke and leaking front brake line
3- worn out brake pads
4- worn out sprockets
5- top end totally shot with cracked piston
6- plastic was junk
7- all swingarm bearings were rusted solid
only good thing about my purchase was the cases, cylinder, frame, crank and tranny were still excellent shape so it made a good platform for a rebuildable machine. BEWARE theres alot of asshats trying to sell junk under the disguise of crappy cell phone pics and false descriptions !

I have had my share of ebay - a few hours of spitting, screeming, yelling, punching holes in perfectly good walls....then I go and do it all over again! Now I am in need of a good CR500R engine and I am left with ebay! The need to have a bike by Pismo is the driving factor to a total melt down and a big chance of getting completely screwed....again......more tape and dry wall mud......

Well, I did get this motor:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 11876&rd=1
1994 engine and I am hoping to have it finished this Saturday. Mr. Lewis and I are going to do our best on getting it all together. Mike sold me a bunch of stuff that we needed to get it together. Hope we don't find more being needed, it's just to close to work the bugs out before the Pismo trip...it flies or dies!
What I was hoping for is a chart or some list of the differences between the Engines/Trannies for all the years and make that a sticky for those that forget. I have the major stuff but, when looking at buying something it sure helps to refresh on what is what. Five speed, close ratio, short/long rod, clutch disks.......This thread helped me not buy the 89 but, I think I will buy an 97+ next? Then I will put this 94 in the other bike......

F*CK ebay. For a few bucks you can get a an app that will let you query craigslist across your entire state or the whole country. I see tons of good deals in there all the time, and you can inspect before you buy.
It's hard to find stuff in NM sometimes but your in CA for chrystsakes.

see the bigjay thread to see how a motor that "ran fine" can actually be...
just be careful.

I know I have said this before but even if you find a 01 it's got a seven year old motor in it.
Buying a motor with the assumption that you can plop it right into your frame is a fools game. Even if it is recently rebuilt you have no guarantee that it was done right.
When you buy a motor, expect to spend 100$ to strip the motor down and go through the entire thing.
