Hoping to tame the nasty 85 hit, anyone have experience with one of these?

I think the reaason the 85 has such a hit is because it has a tiny flywheel.

i had a '85 years ago and didnt find it overly volatile but never the less, on to your question. seems like alot of theories as to why the older bikes seem to pop the front wheel up more often, heres my guess- compression was little higher, port layout was probly alittle different, cdi curve was alittle diferent im sure, flywheel was probly same size but may have been slighly lighter, pipe shape also, crankshafts changed and may have been a factor. it was hondas early years with a 500cc and it was a learning period. weekend warriors getting hurt and moto-x rider input provided valuable information so honda could make a easier to handle bike. in a sense, wider gears may make it smoother. personaly im totaly against flywheel weights, but for a real cheap fix to your problem, i would get heavy flywheel weight

85 more compression, advanced timing, light crank , change thses things and it will mellow alot the shortned rod gives it some lowend blast as well but not bad.

plus the porting is way different, the intake is longer, the squish band is even different.
I'm running an '86 motor with a newer style pipe, and all the pipe changed was it reved out better.
The one thing that worries me about that kit is that the '85 and '86 trannys were way different. either its for '85, or for '86 and '87 since '86 and '87 had the same trans.

A wide ratio transmission will not help as it is spacing the gears out, and might have no effect on the lower gears. You can raise the overall ratio of the lower gears by removing 1-2 teeth from the rear sprocket. I would put a flywheel weight at the top of the list of potential fixes...

a lot of the things you will do to try to bog it down will have the opposite effect. I tried mellowing the hit of my '86 with taller gears and that just made it uncontrolable wheelie time going up every hill. The only way to really effect the hit would be through porting/head work. an '87+head will lower the compression a lot. Infact, an '87 head and jug would be good to change the characteristics a lot. I personally like the hit, makes it one of the most fun bikes to ride. Honestly if you really don't liek the hit...get another bike...

It's all theoretical now, I don't have the motor finished yet. I will be able to use the wide ratio, most of our local dez races have some really fast stuff.

1 piston wasn't enough for me.
