hey all, i'm interested in doing a honda AF convention with my 500, thing being, i have me a KX 500, and i want to put it in a cr125/CRF250R frame, i prefer the Kawi 500 engine over the honda, but i much prefer the handling of the newer honda's, so i want to combine the two.

anyone here attempted such a convention?

I thought about it to until I realized how poorly made the KX motor is compared to a Honda :D but you are right in alot of ways the power is better.

I would think the KXF 450 chasses is the one to do. The CRF chasses is a super X chasses and the KXF from what I am told by people who build them say it is a good high speed bike and the KX500 motor is great for that wide open blasting.

I just traded my CRF 250 and was not that impressed with it in the steering department. And a CR 125 is not a high speed bike at all and like I said the KX motor works great at high speeds.

a '06+kxf conversion would make a killer bike and the cross make bikes usually don't sell for much, a kxf450-500 conversion could get a good chunk of change if you ever have to sell it. Plus people have don't those conversions, so there would be pics and documentation out there...you could see the screwups of others before you make the same mistakes.

you can find CRf chasses all day long and the conversion should work good. I have no problem mixing different brands of bikes.

the point isn't to have good resale, i don't plan on selling it later on lol, i want a nice bike to ride, i currently use the 500 mostly for single track, some MX but mostly tight off road stuff, sometimes i might take it to the dunes but we have very nice wooded areas around here, and i enjoy riding the 500 over my RM 250 (offroad that is, on the track the RM is king), but it's not the best handling chassis ever.

i few people i know have the newer KXF's and CRF's, since i've been thinking of doing the convention for a while, i've been getting some seat time on each bike (both set up for woods riding i should add), and the honda is a lot nicer to ride, hence the reason for wanting to use a honda donor bike.

but if it comes down to it, i suppose the KXF convention if going to be a lot easier, since it has been done before.

since a lot of the guy's here seem to have done AF conventions (honda to honda), i thought this would be a good place to ask, better then anywhere else anyway.

EDIT: i thought i'd just add i won't be rolling up to glamis, or anywhere in the U.S for that, considering i live in Australia and all...

Just wondering if you could zero in on the quality issues with the Kawi.
And, for high speed, in stock form I am suspecting that being a exhaust valve motor it has more exh port blow-down time unlike the Honda, that for it's size, is on the small side. Just a hunch. Edumacate me....

The Kawie motor isn't a Honda on reliabilty. Honda's have been known to go hard for years with just clutch plate changes or a basket change. Kawies have tranny issues, clutch issues, the nik has been known to flake off cylinders the can vibrate like hell. it is a good motor but a Honda is more reliable.

The Kawies have a power valve but it really does not do much. it is of a 1986 DESIGN and does not hardly seal at all. The port, bigger carb layout + heavier crank on the kawie pulls smoother and the bike will float the wheel for a real long distance under power and just seems to skip over obstacles where a CR 500 seems to plow into them.

I loved the design of a KX 500 and felt the package worked better than a Honda. For what you are doing I do not beleive it will matter much but for pinit riding I liked the Kawie much better.
