dumb question time: rear wheel bearings.

How do you get the old ones out? I see the special tools in the manual, but don't quite understand what's going on with them. I'm half tempted to take a die grinder to the old ones, I'm sure they'll fall out plenty easy after that.

Just take a punch and put it through the axle hole opposite the side you are trying to remove. Catch the very edge of the bearing and give it a tap and then move to other side so that you aren't pushing it crooked. You should be able to tap it out without much trouble. If they are already bad you don't have to worry as much but if your just greasing them be gentle or you can ruin the bearing pounding on the inner race.

Dont foget that weird notched bearing retainer thats supposed to unthread but normally disintigrates.

Thats true no amount of taping or pound will do much if thats still in there.

Cool, I'll have to give a punch a try, mine's been MIA for several years. I tried using the Craftsman universal tool (12" flat blade screwdriver) from the inside but it wasn't getting the job done.
Bearing retainer has been removed and is in 3 pieces.

You dont need it anyway, 2 of my wheels have been without a retainer for awhile and no issues.

I don't have one in mine either as long as you've got the seal in there to keep the crap out when you ride. I don't know if the newer bikes have a spacer that runs in between the bearings on each side? Anyways if they do make sure you put that back in there otherwise you will side load those bearings and ruin them. The spacer was missing on my 85 and I made the first one a little bit to short and ruined a brand new set of bearings in about 3 rides.

I found that thread while searching prior to making this one. It makes sense, besides having a nice covenient place for locating the seal, it appears to be unneccessary. I wonder if it was just used in assembly at the factory to insure the bearings were seated correctly?

My bearing retainer actually split in half,yet still has notches on both pieces.I still have the pieces and will post some pics once I figure out how too do that.I was riding the bike when the retainer came loose because the previous owner had made a mees of the threads in the hub.Maybe I won't worry about replacing the hub at all and just run with the spacer.After all I rode around for hours with out noticing any problems.

Perfect timing for the post....I thought my bike had rear wheel steering!!!
So...will the hubs/wheels from a CRF450X direct fit??

Hey thanks for the quick reply guys.....
Anyway, CRF450X front wheel bolts right up brake disk and all. Rear axle is much bigger than 500...so rear wont interchange.
So there you know....

Hay all you smarty pants who think the retainer aint needed, "just make sure you have the seal in there", WTF good is the seal going to do if the retainer isnt there?? You think the seal is not going to just whoola hoop around?? Might as well toss the seal and save the weight cuz thats all its doing for you unless the retainer is there to complete the seal...DUH!!

I aint got a seal on that side, the bearings sealed anyway.

Have you ever taken apart one of those bearings that are "sealed". Its a very basic, almost just a "flap", of a seal. Not sufficient especially against sand and pressure washers...you will see...
