Does an 86 have the same mounting points as a 91-01?

I found an 86 cheeeep. And know of a 97 roller for good deal. My dad is interested in performing conversion as a hobby type project.

What are the pitfalls?

bolt pattern is the same, but the rear bushings are smaller and the coolant hose needs to be re-routed not to hit the bike. look at my gen-1 build for the coolant hose routing. any machine shop should be able to bore out the bushings for you.

'86 is a hot motor, with the short rod and agressive porting and timing it seems to have electric power, definitly makes for a fun and hard to control bike :D

if you ever want to make a 86 run more like the newer CR 5 if you replace the crank go with the 5mm longer rod they used on 87 foward it shfts the power upthat an some fly wheel will get you half way there. The 85 n 86 make more torque at the exspence of a little peak HP. The less rod angle of the newer style crank is more reliable as well.

85 - 88 run the same cylinder the port timing is the same on the cylinders 85- 2001. I like the older style cylinder on the newer bottom end. the old cylinder needs about half the porting work or less to flow alot better. if you look at a 85-88 cylinder side by side by a newer one you will see the newer one requires way more grinding to straighten it out.

Also the the pipe at the barrels sits 5mm lower which is a slight bonus for a AF conversion and the 85 to 88 have a longer intake track which holds a better flowing reed cage. Draw back is a way grabbier clutch but it easy to up grade to the 91 and up style.

Mines an 87 motor in a 97 AF, slightly mellower to the 86-85 but I love it!

The reed cage on the 89 and newer is designed to shift the spread of power up. Honda was trying to tame the torque hit out of the middle.

A 87 will actually walk away from a 85- 86 on top. If I ever replace a Rod in a 85 86 I always put the newer style in and machine a 5mm spacer. For torquing up hills the 85 86 are killer!
