just for you Bob, a clean 85

Exceptionally clean, unrestored 1985 CR500 $1,600

I am the second owner of this bike and I bought it from a friend in 2003. He bought it new at Barber Honda in Ventura, CA in 1985 and he seemed to have been afraid of it from day one. I am not exaggerating when I say that he rode it somewhere between 10 and 15 times in the entire 18 years that he had it. In fact, when I bought it from him, it had the original tires on it and it hadn’t been ridden in almost 10 years. The last green sticker that he put on the bike was in 1994 and he handed me a stack of the rest of them.

One of the first things that I did was to pull the top end. It was fine but I decided to bore it 0.5mm over and rebuild the top end with a new Wiseco Pro-Lite piston. It didn’t need it but I wanted to know exactly what condition it was in. I also change all of the hoses at the time it was rebuilt. I have ridden it maybe 20 times in the last 4 years and it is still in excellent condition. All of the plastics on it (except the rear fender) are original and in very good shape. I only replaced the rear fender (with another OEM Honda fender) because I had drilled 4 holes in it to mount a fender pack.

I just bought a 98 CR500 and I don’t need both bikes. As much as I love this bike and the power of the early engines, I have decided to sell it and keep the 98 which has some very nice mods.

I just tore the entire bike down to clean and inspect it. I wanted to make sure that nothing is broken or missing before selling it. I replaced the clutch and throttle cables, put on a new rear tire (only the 3rd tire ever on this bike), and cleaned every part on the bike. As long as I have owned it, I changed the gear oil every 2-3 rides with Honda 80W/85W HP trans oil. I have always used Bel-Ray MC1 premix oil at 50:1 and the piston and cylinder look great. I did a static compression test and it reads 145psi, which is still very good. The air filter was cleaned and oiled after every ride. The cylinder has not had any drastic port work, only the edges of the ports were cleaned up after it was bored. I just changed the right side crankcase cover, water pump impeller and seals about 2 months ago. I used all OEM Honda parts and the water pump shaft is in excellent shape with no grooves from the seals. It has new 1 1/8” tapered bars with Scott Hurricane grips. All of the bearings in the swingarm and shock linkage have just been inspected, cleaned, and greased as have the steering stem bearings. I changed the chain slider and bottom roller at the same time due to normal wear, again with OEM Honda parts. It is geared 14/53 with a relatively new DID o-ring chain (the sprockets show no wear and all were changed together). The levers are original. Even the radiators look perfect.

The only parts on this bike that are not original are the rear chain guide, the handlebars, and the addition of a Cobra spark arrestor. I replaced the original chain guide with a new style one from Fredette Racing Products when the stock one broke a couple of years ago. I would have replaced it with a new one from Honda but that part is no longer available. I just replaced the bars when I went through the bike this month as the stock ones were slightly bent. When I changed the bars, I used new 1 1/8” bar mounts from Pit Posse. I added the spark arrestor because I got a very expensive ticket once for riding without one and I couldn't find a complete aftermarket unit available for this bike.

The pipe is stock and has a few dings in it on the lower portion. It will also come with a Pro Circuit pipe which I bought recently on ebay and have never used. It comes with the following extra parts: new OEM Honda base and head gaskets, new OEM Honda fork oil and dust seals, new OEM Honda connecting rod pin, small end bearing, and circlips, an Acerbis plastic skid plate that was on the bike for one ride before I tore it apart, a set of Works Connection weld on footpeg extensions that I never installed, the stock bar mounts, the original owner's manual, and a Honda service manual. You can also have the original rear fender with the holes drilled in it if you want it. Any other miscellaneous parts that I have for this bike that I haven’t listed will go with it as well. Oh yeah, if you want it the bike will come with over 1 gallon of Bel-Ray MC1 premix oil. My 98 was run on Castor oil and I won’t switch it back to synthetic until I do the top end.

The only thing that this bike is missing is the decal on the right tank shroud. It was missing when I got the bike and I tried then to order it from Honda but it is unavailable and has been for several years. The right side number plate has some wear on the yellow background from my boots rubbing it while starting the bike. This bike will start on the 1st or 2nd kick for me every time, hot or cold. Everything works and is in great shape or I would have replaced it. This is the most reliable bike that I have ever owned.

I have posted several pictures in the ad and links to larger pictures from almost every angle. If you want to see any area of the bike in greater detail, PM me and I will send you all the pictures that you want.
