1985 Motor Rebuild

I got a 85 for 100$ and am considering rebuilding it for use in an AF.
The cases and tranny looks good but the crank has some play.
What are my options for the crank? Will one of the newer ones work? Can I have it rebuilt?
Also, the right clutch cover was cracked from a garage fallover. Will a newer cover fit the 85 cases?
Thanks

from what i understand ( i only just recently learned this myself) the newer cranks will fit but you need a spacer for your cylinder as they are a bit longer, someone who knows more will certainly chime in here.

Get a rod kit for it and the 87 case is the one to get all the hoses are the
same and you get the removeable clutch cover.

I don't see any rod kits for an 85. Can anyone recommend a shop to rebuild the crank for me?

The rod kit will be for a 89 to 2001 thats why you will also need the spacer plate that goes under the barrel, because this is a longer rod then the now discontinude 85-86 rod. Also your case that is on your motor does not have a removeable cover to get to the clutch, you want this so get one off a 87 to 89. You will most likely need it any how as the area around your water pump will be rotted out.

I checked on bikebandit and it appears that the rod parts are still available. If i can't get them where do you get the spacer from?
thanks for your help

I used a '90+ side cover on my '86. it made hose routing for the jug in an AF easier, added capacity and allowed me to use the newer style clutch. Plus its not magnesium like the '88 and older ones.
You can get a rod kit for it, but make sure the crank fits tight in the main bearings first, if it doesn't fit tight in the bearings, you should just get a new crank.
if you get a new crank, you can use the long rod ones with the spacer from cometic. I have the part number from them somewhere, let me know if you need it.
double check the tranny well, those I believe had 3 dogs instead of 4 (starting in '86) if the trans is beat, pickup a full assembly from a '86 or '87 and you will get a stornger trans and can use the newer clutch basket.

yeah, either way, the '86-'87 trannys are stronger... and deals like this are happening all the time..
