Wheel swappin

I needed a new knobbie for the AF and a new paddle for the GSS bike, so me being cheap I did some wrenchin.

Im gonna be on the paddle most of the time with the GSS bike now and the AF is mostly a trail bike.

The rear rotors are bigger on the AFs so the wheels will not swap out, I switched rotors from the 19" AF wheel to the 18" steelie wheel and they bolted up perfect. I've now got decent tires on both for no cash outlay

This will only work on the early AFs tho as they changed axle size (not sure which year)

All I need to do now is find a cheepie paddle for the other AF rim and I've got a set

18" on the AF...

brit before you put that piece of shit on that bike you can have my older 18" paddle.. I honestly cannot stand riding that intimidator.. Its a 10 blade on a 18" wheel its the wide 18 not the regular 110. It came on my 500 but i wanted a new paddle ( had money burnin a hole in my pocket ) so this one is just sittin on the rim still.. Ill gladly take it off and give it to ya.. But its up to you. I also havent forgotton about that front tire either.. Im waiting to either get my rim repaired or get a new one.. not sure which way im going yet but i will be swapping to that ribbed tire for sure sometime soon.

i dont know if you are still confused on the wheels brit...but here is the skinny. I have been using my 500 wheel (with the short rotor) on my conversion...and the 97 250 wheel as my paddle. It was ruining my brake pads as you can imagine. MTneilson and I switched rotors (my tall 250 one for his short 500 one) and he gave me a 500 caliper so I could set mine up with both short rotors.

I had to go with the short rotors because my 500 wheel has a short one on it and it is an 88 wheel. I dont know what year they changed the rotor style but on my wheel the rotor is held on by 6 bolts rather than 4, so I couldnt just put a 4 bolt rotor on because only 2 holes would line up.

I am pretty sure the 250 changed their rotor sizes with the aluminum frames. If you had the short caliper (which I think all 500's and 96 and older 250's cross over) then you could find a cheaper replacement wheel. On ebay I saw a 250 wheel end for $50 just the other day cause not many people know they cross over with the 500, and 500 wheels end over $120 all the time.

They changed the axle diameter in the 2000 and newer bikes so they wont cross over...unless you can do some bearing switching or something. The newer wheels cross over between the CRF450's (maybe the CRF250's) and CR250's too so they sell for a lot more anyways.

A long winded response full of stuff you probably already know.

I have 5 or 6 rear wheels now and the only wheel that would accept the 4 bolt AF rotor was the 2000 wheel, like you said all the others I have are 6 bolt rotors and wont mate up.

Gotcha...so take a 500 caliper and put it on your conversion...then you'll have 5-6 wheels rather than one.

I am looking for a rear wheel to have as a street wheel if you wanna get rid of one. :)

I also have my 88 caliper that will cross over for ya and it is black...would look pretty sweet on your bike. If the cables are long enough you could just switch out your whole system. It's got almost new pads on it.

I have 2 19" wheels and 4 18" wheels.

The steelie has a 19" 12 blade paddle and a 18" knobbie setup

The AF currently has an 18" knobbie and a 19" rim thats soon gonna get a paddle.

The other two 18" wheels are sitting on a shelf, one with a ruined brake rotor and the other with a really decent crack.

Ive got 3 CR500 rear brake setups under the table in the shed.

I ended up parting out 3 bikes over the last 2 years and I collected al lot of stuff lol.

I see, and the ruined rotor one has the 6 bolt pattern which are hard to find rotors for.
I might still be interested if you want to part with it.

Does anyone know right off the top of their head if a 19" rear wheel off a 95 cr250 will fit my 99 AF conversion??

yes it will but you will need to switch the rotor to the tall one of the 99. Thats the main difference. Axle size is the same.

its still a great tire I picked another one up but when I went into there shop I was thinking they where still $38 like the one I bought a month or so before picking that one up.

were they only 38.00? dammn, thats steep! I guess the cdn $ was only .70 cents at the time, instead of the par we've got now. Either way I haven't had a chance to use either tire yet
