Well I finally got a hoon machine today. I picked up a pretty sweet bike, paid 1800$ but I think it was worth it.

Freshly powder-coated frame also. Runs and shifts like a bandit! Had to travel 2 hrs. to hunt her down. Tell me what you think! First thing Im gunna do is rip off all those gay stickers.

I have a 1997 CR500, it is in absolutely excellent condition, it has:

FMF Gold Series Gnarly Exhaust

New SDG Seat Cover
New Grips
Tires on the bike are good, but will supply a new set with bike.

Magura Hydraulic Clutch

Also comes with Stand, and a new full gasket kit that I bought, and only ever used 1 exhaust gasket out of it.

Bike has mad power and looks an runs beautifully. You would be hard pressed to find a better example of a steel framed 1997 anywhere.

I am only the second owner, and the bike has been very well looked after all of its life. The bike has never been raced.

Bike is located, and would need to be picked up from Chino Hills, California.

Ha, funny you say that. It was advertised as a '97 right? Well it has a '99 sticker on the frame. I asked, "whats up with the '99 sticker.". He said he just "found one" ha. I knew something was up...wonder what was wrong with the original? Damn I shoulda checked the VIN. Maybe he did just "sawp" the sticker. ??

List of what to do now....

1. Pull the reed block and pipe to check the piston. 30 minutes of work will give you solid peace of mind.

2. Wrap the Magura clutch line in a split piece of vacuum hose for added protection. They have rubbed through before , up and under the fuel tank.

3. Take everything apart and grease it. More piece of mind. Check the rear wheel bearings closely.

4. Add a fuel filter and toss that automotive fuel line while your at it .

5. Take some sag measurements to confirm spring rate is ok for your size. I see a sticker on the fork, what rate does it list?

6. Remove and " Flush and Fill" the forks. Forks freak people out, but this is really simple to do. Once cleaned out, keep on top of it. "Turkey Gravy" forms pretty quick and is the #1 cause of suspension issues up front.

7. Check the Boot to Airbox connection. Its somewhat problematic but easily repaired with weatherstrip adhesive.

8. Add your choice of thread locker to the kick starter and countershaft sprocket bolt. Losing either will ruin your day

9. Check all wiring for chaffing. Repair as necessary.

10. Flushing the brakes is easy, and eliminates one more thing to bite you in the ass.

Wow, this list seems like alot, but it is mostly your time, and a few bucks for suspension fluids, brake fluid, a tub of Bel Ray grease, fuel filter and hose, and some brake cleaner. Get it all done this weekend....easy.

Items to upgrade if you keep it a Steelie for a while.:

1. O or X Ring chains are almost manditory. No fuss or muss, and they stay adjusted for what seems forever. If you dont have one, buy one at replacement time.

2. PMB Kickstand. Best $140 mod there is.

3. 39mmPWK carb. Big improvement in ridability. Transfers over to a A/F build with the motor.

4. Since your saving money on servicing your forks, send the shock in for a service.

I didn't really notice it last night when I bought the bike, but the lower end has some kind of knock. Its kind of loud and sounds a bit like a diesel. Is this normal?

Here are some pics of looking through the intake & exhaust and reeds too...Clean bill 'o health. It looks practically new. Machining marks and everything.

They all make a horrible lower end noise, its nothing to worry about.

maybe yours does. i dont remeber hearing a horrible knock in mine . maybe it was them fried clutch plates . j/k man

If you dont think these bikes sound like shit close up you need a hearing aid.

Noise isnt necessarily bad... Excessive vibrations are... dead giveaway that the borttom end is going south.

I guess that is my old frame then. I think he had cracked the '97 around the footpeg and didn't want to just have it welded. That '99 frame came off a very low use bike. Everything should be all good.
