Injured man targets Evel Knievel estate:

LOS ANGELES — Of all the bones Evel Knievel broke over the years, the costliest may have been the left arm of a PR man by the name of Shelly Saltman.

Saltman won $12.75 million in damages against Knievel after the motorcycle daredevil attacked him with a baseball bat in 1977 in a rage over a book Saltman had written about the showman.

With interest, the still-uncollected sum has grown to more than $100 million by Saltman's estimate, and he intends to try to collect it.

"We are going hot and heavy after his estate," Saltman told The Associated Press after Knievel died Friday at 69. "What he tried to do to me and how it hurt my family, I'm owed that."

Whether Knievel's estate has that kind of money is unclear.

Knievel's son Kelly would not discuss the size of his father's estate or comment on the dispute.

Although little remembered today, the incident made headlines worldwide when the death-defying motorcyclist approached Saltman in the parking lot of 20th Century Fox on Sept. 21, 1977, and pummeled him with a baseball bat. Saltman, a studio executive, raised his arm to protect his head, a move he says doctors told him probably saved his life.

His arm is held together by a steel plate and screws.

Knievel served six months in jail and would never again enjoy the public acclaim he had when he tried unsuccessfully to jump Idaho's Snake River Canyon on a jet-powered motorcycle in 1974

Knievel complained at the time that Saltman's book, "Evel Knievel on Tour," insulted his family and portrayed him as "an alcoholic, a pill addict, an anti-Semite and an immoral person."

The ONLY reason Saltman is bringing this up AFTER Evel's death , is he knows Evel would have finished the job otherwise.

What a bitch.....

It's a bitch move indeed, but not surprising by today's standards. Whatever happened to whipping someone's ass, or taking your licks? The baseball bat might have been a little excessive though.

I'm not going to argue about if the beating was justified, I'm just saying if you want to sue somebody, do it while their alive, not their estate....

dont be a bitch...

I would have to assume he did sue Evil, but didn't get paid. Sueing the estate sounds like a way to collect something because the money is about to be diveed up anyways. I know if someone was ordered by a court to pay me some money after having taken a bat to me, I would want the money weather the attacker was alive or dead. As for the worth of his estate? God knows how much he had, but I did see a Ebay sale of his crashed snake river rig where the asking price was in the millions, so Evil prolly was a wealthy man. Not to mention the money Kanye West owes him for the lawsuite that just ended. CHicken shit? Maybe, but if your a wealthy person and you bash someone with a bat, expect to pay the money.

I would agree with you, a much more sensible and therapeutic approach for sure.
