Issues with the 1989 motor??

I have a chance to pick up a 1989 500 for $1000. I know that these have a smaller clutch assembly and was curious if this meant I should stay away from it. Are there issues with getting clutch baskets? Can an 89 be converted over to the larger clutch assembly like the later model 500's? Lastly, are there issues with the hole diameter of the swing arm pivot area? I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Thank you

89 has the larger swingarm bolt already. The clutch case and internals can all be updated if needed or you can narrow a later basket and inner hub on a lathe to get you by.

some 89s still used magnesium right side case/water pump, mine did
if you know the guy and can pull the water pump off you may find either a corroded pump or one that's pristine, the good news is you can still buy the covers, I think around $240.

You guys are awesome!! One more, and I'll shut up!! When you convert the older clutch mechanism to the more modern unit, like the 01, do you have to replace the entire left side cover that the individual saucer sized clutch cover bolts to? I can pick up this 89. I'm ok with the shorter 4th and 5th gears but the clutch basket is pretty grooved and I couldn't find a new one, although I haven't looked that hard. Needless to say I'm thinking about converting it over to the more modern assembly.

Thanks again!

you will need the new side case, the new clutch won't fit the 89 cover but the new cover will fir the 89 motor
