I decided to start building....

Post by 2strokeforever »

Ive wanted to build a stol airplane for quite a while, Ive got a genral idea what I want, and enough parts to (slowly) start building and Im going for it

Image

The original plan was to copy the channel wing beacuse of its simplicity and awesomness (it made enough lift standing still (no wind) to take off with no ground roll (it needed some speed to fly for the rudder and elevator to work)
this picture was taken in 1953 at 10 mph airspeed

but to make it stable it needs to be a twin prop layout (twin engine or a mess of chains)
those channels are going to be a nightmare to make strong and light
if the engine fails you have the glide ratio of a ford van

so ive settled on a single engine prop in front blown flap narrow wing span, the blower will also suck the boundary layer off the wing near the middle
interesting video 22 min is the idea im copying

it works

Im copying the wing chord, rudder, and elevators off a zenith c701

so the plan is to have the 500 spin the supercharger making a lot of air at 10 psi (40 horsepower worth to be exact)
burn most of that air (if nessesary all of it and water injection to keep temps reasonable)
blast it out the trailing edge at a 45 downward angle (10 psi in an open ended pipe is gonna have some power)
the polaris will be out front making quite a bit of airspeed and hopefully it will lift off without moving
the plan is to be able to fly it while tied to the ground and not going anywhere till i get the feel of how it behaves

im hoping it will weigh under 700lbs, 130hp to the prop, 40 worth of compressed air, not sure how much power burning 30 gallons an hour in the burner is going to add, but im sure it will be plenty

this is going to be a long term project, any parts, input or whatever apreciated
the 450 will have less power and will be harder to start, and will be heavier, but to make up for it it will require more maintenance.

what is that single without the trans?
seems like 40 HP constant from the 500 is asking a lot, you will need quite a bit of cooling for this project, wish you luck and looking forward to this build. if you are set on having single, the Honda Pilot is a 400 CC same stroke as our 500s, no trans but does have a counter balance.
Maybe you can use the blower to supercharge the rotax?
Gen 2 AF, yes it's a SH, so I can call it an AF Damm it!

its a cr500 without the trans, it will only run on takeoff
the coolant will run thru it all the time, so it will be warm and ready for landing anytime
plan on starting it by forcing compressed air thru the blower
stil havent figured out if im going to govern the engine, if i cant then i will manualy throttle it with a deal set up to let off if theres too much backpressure
the 450 will have less power and will be harder to start, and will be heavier, but to make up for it it will require more maintenance.
