'85 '97 shocks

Post by Tharrell »

Follow me on this one,
'97 roller with rear shock.
'85 with an Ohlins shock.
'82 with a factory shock.

I wanna use the Ohlins on the '82 and it looks like it will work.
Does anyone know if the '97 will work on my '85?
The '85 is being painted so I can't match it up right now.
Mostly concerned with the res location on the '97 and the airbox on the '85.
Maybe one of you guys have put a modern shock on an '85.

I can't help you specifically, but here's what I went through. Put my 97 shock onto my 93 250, since it was valved for me and had hi and lo speed comp. To make it fit I had to grind the left side of the upper shock mount on the frame so it would slide in. Using straight vertical as a benchmark, I'm fairly certain you don't want any side loads on the shock. Piston running up and down at 500 mph and whatnot. Had to grind the front of the shock itself on the front of the eye to clear the frame spine. Will yours be easier? Hard to say. I'm thinking absolute vertical on the axis of travel is most important.

Well, the Ohlins is too long for the 480 so it puts the stop to my scheme.
I do have that '97 shock though.
I've heard the stock '97 is better than earlier versions?
My '92 has been redone by Race Tech so I don't know if I would actually gain anything but would like to know if the '97 is considered any good.
