Wheel Balancing 101

My XR650R would shake my fillings loose on the freeway..... rims are dead straight, its that friggin' rim lock that throws everything out of whack. I'm going for my first ride, post ripped off achillies, this weekend and didnt want to deal with all that vibration..... so I did this.

and this...

I suppose you could use those "Peel and Stick" lead weights as well.

4 oz. did the job nicely on the front, I did use 5 o.z. on the rear, but thats allot of sticky weights. The difference is HUGE!!! Like I said in the video, this is not just for street guys, Desert runners and Dual Sport / Super Moto guys will ride longer without fatigue or numbness.

These are made in china, which means their crap. The broached allen hole in the set screw in perticular. I checked all of them, and used the ones broached the deepest. Some were barely broached at all.

Wish me luck on my ride, hope nothing falls off me, or the bike!!!

Good luck on the ride, hope you hold together.

My 650R blast down the freeway without any weights on there but I go about a half hour at the most. Pretty much try to stay in the dirt.

next time you have the tires off try a set of the motion pro lite rim locks i run them on my stuff work great and should cut your amount of balance weight at least in half , probably more

Went 109 miles today.... ( 56 dirt, the rest pavement). What a huge difference, especially riding one handed.

I'm changing her name from the Hondapotums, to the Couchasourus.

I wrapped some electrical tape around mine to keep them in one place. They don't have those allen screws.

I used to balance my wheels for mx made a big difference especially in the air over high speed table top jumps and the long fast straights

That wont correct the balance very much, but I often wonder why they dont do this OEM?

ya i wonder why also , although i seem to remember some steel wheel 70s stuff oe like that , plus if you did the lite rim locks at 180 then you might get away with very little weight added else where,, just thinking out loud...

draggin up an old post

You want to isolate tire bead movement near the valve stem to keep from tearing the valve stem.
Installing the rim lock across from the valve stem leaves the stem venerable and puts the wheel weights on the spokes
on either side of the valve stem, making it a hassle to put air in the tire.
I have not had good luck with the stick on weights.
I use aluminum duct tape on the spoke before I put the weight on the spoke.

I like the weights with the allen screw, where did you get them.

The problem with balancing the wheel on the bike, brake pads as you mentioned and
the seal on each side of the wheel, on the axel. Causing drag.

I build this from one I saw on line for sale. If you have basic welding skills
it's very easy to build.

I built mine 15 years ago. Using the axel you sometimes need to put the wheel spacers on before you balance.

It would be hard to make one cheaper than this one.

The red tire holder on my Iron Man tire machine is from Harbor Freight.

I must agree on one thing.
Wheel on the bike balance is better than no balance.
