Ok, I feel silly for asking, but I dont know the answer!
Will the coil / cdi from an 86 work on an 88?
Ive never needed to know this information as all the 500's Ive ever owned were 1986's.
I just bought an 85 motor and an 88 motor, but the 88 didnt come with the coil etc.
Can I use one of my old 86 set ups, or is it different? (Im thinking it is)
Thanks.

I wouldn't unless you use the entire '86 setup. '84, '85, '86, '87 all saw a completely different ignition every year. '87+ is all the same
If you have to use '86 parts, use all of them, the stator, cdi and coil are all different from '87+ and '85.

the '86 coil gives different resistance, so I bet it will work, but who knows how long and how well. plus the '86 coil is smaller and the mounting holes are different.
