Long time lurker. I have a 1991 CR500.
Been riding since 1982 When I lived in San Bernardino, Ca. First bike was a 76 KX400. My dad had to start it for me and I did not get out of second gear. Next was more my size, a 71 SL100 dual sport, then the following 77 YZ250, 84 XL600. Total the XL600 into a truck in 1991 when I was 20 then moved to Kentucky. Did not ride from 91 to 94. Got a 91 YZ250 in 1994. Then I wanted something bigger and got the 97 CR500 in 2000. Sold it in 2003 and got into quads, 01 Raptor 660, 98 Grizzly 600, 2005 Grizzly 660 , 2003 Raptor 660. Now I am back on 2 wheels.
Thanks to a post from Bob to check the piston for cracks, I took off the reed valve and it was cracked. I got a Vertex piston and got the cylinder bored 1 over. Now i just need to put it back together.
This site rock's.

This is absoultly the FIRST THING any new owner of a CR500 should do.raptor1971 wrote: Thanks to a post from Bob to check the piston for cracks, I took off the reed valve and it was cracked. I got a Vertex piston and got the cylinder bored 1 over.
If the piston scattered, you would have had a real mess on your hands...
