Replacing '85 fork seals

Post by mr500 »

I am helping a mate replace the fork seals in his '85 honey bunny.
I have never worked on convential forks before.
When reading the repair book it says i will
"need to make/use a special tool to hold the cartaridge, otherwise i will damage the cartaridge".

Q. Will i be able to hold the cartaridge with my hand while using a rattle gun to undo the bottom nut, like i do with USD forks or do i have to use a tool.
Thanks for your A's :D

Not totally sure about the CR forks because I have not played with those but on most of the old conventionals you can dump the oil, undo the circlip, pressurize the top with air and blow the seals up and out. Slide them up over the top and slide your new ones down, use paper to protect the seal going back on done, refill to desired height with oil and complete. When blowing the seal out wrap it with a towell so you don't blast oil all over town.

Yeah I passed that bit along as it was not passed to me my first go around, trail and error had me wearing some dots on the coveralls.

Ok.Pressured the forks with massive amounts of air (circlip removed) nothing.
Made up a holder tool from a big nut and it 'cracked' straight away.
Dismantled fork etc. (not a lot going on in one of them old forks).
Cleaned-reassembled-filled with fresh gravy. Binking now! :D
