Mik's GEN 3
Mik's GEN 3
I got the frame back yesterday so here it is in this new post rather than hi-jacking Crackers thread further. I think the fabrication turned out good and I'm happy with how the top of the Y is reinforced. I'm not real happy with how the welds look though, so I might look into fixing that after run it for a bit and do a tear down again. It was 200 bucks for all the work so I can't bitch that much. If anyone is interested in my engine jig, I'm probably going to build a few of them next month when I get the tubing for the swingarm rather than cut up expesive OEM collars.
A guy of by Lake Elsinore did it for me and he's been welding longer than I've been around. I kidded him about how they looked and all he said isCR500R-G3 wrote:As long as it holds, I wouldn't give the welds a second thought. By the time you get the pipe on, you're not going to see much of the Y anyway.
What thickness of material did he use to box in the top of the Y? I think I like that better than the bat wings.
Good job.
" this wasn't easy and I should have charged you alot more" LOL He used 1/8 thick billet for the Y and pretty much copied Shanmans motor mounts.
If this does not hold I'm going to go with the whole new Y and heat treated route ,so we'll see. As Bob said, this shit is pretty hard to weld so that's why I didn't try it with my limited TIG welding skills.
Talk to Teemtrouble (Mike) about the heat treating. I would bet that he'd suggest that you have it done now. The guy really knows his stuff.Mik329 wrote:A guy of by Lake Elsinore did it for me and he's been welding longer than I've been around. BTW, I'm not saying that this stuff is rocket science, but if it lessons the chances of failure, why not do it? Also, I have a lot of respect for Mike's opinions on the subject.
Being completely ignorant on the subject of metallurgy, I would totally have that conversation/education and really should butt out of this one.CR500R-G3 wrote:That bike doesn't see any abuse. Trust me, I'm as ignorant on the subject as most. All I know is what he's shared with me. However, after seeing his build, talking to him on the phone for a good while and given his experience, if he told me this needed to be heat treated, it would get heat treated.MojoScojo wrote:Being completely ignorant on the subject of metallurgy, I would totally have that conversation/education and really should butt out of this one.CR500R-G3 wrote:That bike doesn't see any abuse. Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to ask. mike@fachar-sons.com

I think it looks great. I have the box sections made for mine, and did mine the same way. I used .080 and used .125 DOM tube cut in half and pressed the aluminum into it to make a half moon saddle to box it in with (pics to come soon). I used a 1 piece inner support to close it out where you used a 2 piece section. Great job
Re: cr500 Jig
I haven't had a chance to knock any of them out yet, but I'll let ya know when I do....probably after new years.DPinDet wrote:Hey mik329. I think I may be interested in one of your CR500 jigs.
