This is a Rolls Royce Merlin (1650 cu in)
Its what transformed the Mustang from a 302 small block in to the Boss 429
This is the Rolls Royce Griffon (2240 cu in)
It was used mostly for the Shackelton Bomber
The Grifion had the grunt to swing the two, contra-rotatating props.
Its been tried after the Red Baron... but never with much sucess...

Pretty frickin cool stuff man that merlin motor didnt look very good. My dad was a pilot and owned a beach bonanza that he would take us up in which was some of my best memories with my dad, Well that and the miramar air show every year. Planes are crazy cant just pull over and pop the hood. Good videos thanks.

Any other Hoons going?
If I had more time, I'd be inclined to stop for a while. I'll be heading east thru Reno on Tuesday the 13th.

This is what we Aussies do with aeroplane engines, not sure if you guys have had the chance to see this thing touring the States but it is crazy in the flesh.
Sorry about the link I don't know how to post the vid straight up.
Last year their was a big bang, a pop, and then a rough running engine. The pilot landed and the crew spent the next 4 hours chocking their chicken to find the problem ( Rossty and I watched the whole time)
They were reading the plugs, running the valves, doing a leak down test, bore scoping things... it took forever and they finally thew in the towel at 1am and swapped motors.....
A buddy just sent me a photo of what the damage was.....
With all the diagostic shit, and a crew of 5 guys swarming over the thing... and they couldnt find this....

I can't even count the number of times you asked them "why don't you do a leak down?"
Idiots!

If they already pulled the plugs they could have stuck a cheapo compression gauge and found a problem. I'm surprised they didn't see aluminum al over the plug.

The boys were starting to fly in over the Lake yesterday. Good sounding motors with short wings flying close together, a lot of those dudes seem to fly in by the pair.
I'm out of town this weekend, enjoy if you come up. The Hill behind you at the Airstrip is called Peavine Peak, good riding up there, thats my daily grinder going back in towards Ca. The hills out the other way connect into the area they call Moonrocks and there is a bunch of fun stuff there too, plus everything in the middle that few people touch.
