SURRY COUNTY, N.C. -- A 67-year-old man who was out walking along Franklin Road Friday morning told investigators he felt threatened during an encounter with another man and shot the man at about 5:45 a.m., Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson said.
Atkinson said Arnold Moser was on his routine morning walk when 24-year-old David Lee Thomas drove by shouting vulgarities out of the car window.
When Thomas stopped and got out his car with his fists balled, Moser shot Thomas in the groin, Atkinson said.
Thomas was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with critical injuries, but he's expected to live, Atkinson said.
Atkinson said the investigation hasn't been completed and no charges have been filed. Moser's gun wasn't concealed and was legally registered, Atkinson said.
