714's 08 CRF250-500 Conversion

Post by AMA714 »

First, let me thank Bob, Roosty, Dogger and 87CR500 for all of the tips, answers and advice. I had been looking at doing this for about 2 years and can honestly say, without this site, I may not have actually done it.

I started off by picking up a mint (12hour) 2008 CRF250 that already had RG3 suspension work for my weight and speed. I stripped the engine out of the chassis and sold it to a guy on ProRide in less than a day..woo-whoo.

Then the project sat for a good 3 months as I gathered parts, bought an engine and contemplated how I was going to start. I had read Bobs build post a billion times and by asking questions became connected to some very good dudes on here.

Grabbed the sawzall and snip snip... Y was out

Next step was cleaning up all of the pocket and getting Y ready

My downtube was easy to get out. There was a visable line around the pocket except for 2 weld penetrations front and back. I took a chisel and gave the little weld a quick tap and it was loose
[/imgImage
next I filed the edge and the downtube piece came right out

Then the bike sat and sat and sat..... wondering where I was going to get a decent welder. I have pretty decent fab skills, but since I moved here a year ago, no connection to a decent welder.

I figured I would slide the 500 in and see how it looked

good carb clearance

While I was on the site I made contact with a hoon here in San Antonio. CR500 (Tony) was at the same stage in his build, so we have bounced ideas, drank beer and pondered the ins and outs of the Aliso Bob way or the full cradle.

Tony had moved his Y, made the new tube and I was about to follow suit when I met Dogger. Great guy from Illinois, does nice work and made me a deal I couldnt refuse...lol

I had a bunch of work travel, Cancun etc, etc... all kinds of reasons to not get er done, so I sent the frame north.

I just got it back and will let ya know how it goes.

Here is his work.[imgImage[/img]

Good move on the cradle replacement. If I had it to do over, I would prolly' go that direction as it looks way cleaner.

Just cuz' I built my bike ,my way.... it doesnt mean you have to!!! I build it when options like cradle replacement didnt exist for most homebuilders.....

MXD does good work.

Bob, I think that if peeps cant get the correct bent rails, then building it your way, is the right way.

BTW.. all these pics are from my i-phone, so I apologize if some shots dont look good.

Anyway, I got the frame back last Friday and proceeded to start putting some stuff together. A couple hours later I was looking good. Bare frame to an almost MX bike...

I was still missing a few pieces and need to fab a few but I wanted to see how she was going to look.

I was not really diggin the all white plastics so I grab a spare front fender from my 09 450 and started making it fit. I like this much better. Plus it kinda matches my 450

Ok.. So a little more progress. I have decided that I am going to run a single outlet head. My head had the stock outlets pretty messed up, so I removed them in preparation to run 1.

I ordered a stock CRF250 outlet elbow for $14.00 and sniped the ear off
[imgImage

Once trimmed and filed, i checked orientation and will mount it like this

I was also getting the rad ready to mod, and thought this same elbow looks as though it would dump straight into the stock water pump hose...
Yep, perfect fit!!

I have a stock pipe, and an FMF muffler to use, but really like the natural finish of the PC works pipe. Its going to be a moto only bike so Im not terribly worried about the damage the offroad guys get. What is the PC pipe like performance wise? It looks like it is a copy of the stocker to a certain extent?? Is it a little more of an RPM pipe?

Want to sell that stock pipe? ....I find the PC to wind out a little more but I think some other guys think the FMF winds out more...never figured that one out.

I dint notice any difference at all between the procircuit and FMF.

In fact the only pipe I can tell a diff with is the noleen on my nitrous bike.

Thanks for the compliments guys. If it wasnt for Banned I would never had the opportunity to see so many other builds.

Im still looking for info on the PC pipe in relation to a stocker. Like I said, it will be an MX only bike. .... Guess Ill burn a few hundred and get the pipe! then let ya know what I think.
