I'm about to re-index the kicker shaft when I found this

If you read down he claims the case cracked because the match marks were off...
I am/was planning to run a gen3 250 kicker on my a/f conversion and was going to re-index to fit nicely, now this damn article has me a little worried...

they always crack there. didnt know it had anything to do with the dots. figured it was 20 years of banging up and down. that lower end appears to be early 1990

That's what I figured did it, it was just his statement that he seemed convinced it was due to the markings

I think it is caused by improper starting method which could become worse with improper indexing. if you don't start at tdc and kick all the way through the kick could stop just before TDC and cause it to kick back. when this happens the kicker is slammed back into the stop in the case and it breaks the case.
you are fine moving it 1 spline to help with 250 kicker fitment, but if it is really far off it could cause the kicker to engauge further down in the stroke causing an incomplete kick putting the cases at risk.

that kicker gear was alongway missaligned we only had to move ours one spline that one was nearly 4
