Hey Guys,
What motor do you like better??? I have a 01 in my AF now and am thinking of making another AF and have a fully rebuilt 89 motor available to me... I was going to use the 01, But if the 89 is just as good or can be made to be as good or better then I will go that route... L8R Mark

89 has close ratio tranny. Good for MX and single track

01 has wider ratio tranny. Good for dez, fire roads, haulin' ass.

My buddy has an 86 and i have an 01 motor. they are completely different to ride. the 86 is not as strong on the bottom and revs out further. THe 01 hits hard right away and signs off more quickly.

How much difference in the Trannys?

hmmmmm

Somthin doesn't smell right.

Last I knew the 89 was THE motor to have. Especially for a conversion. Big swingarm axle. Lighter crank, last of the good porting without silly scallops in the exhaust. Just needs a clutch upgrade and a good freshening. Of course I'm into MX or ST riding so the MX gear box is the icing on the cake.

Rob129's bike is the only '89 I've rode.... great engine. Pretty zippy.

I've had more than 20 cranks, a few that were supposedly from 89 engines, nothing different in weight, it's a revised balance factor

Big swingarm axle.

This is incorrect... It has the smaller (15mm) pivot bolt bushing... We took the bushing out and had them machined to 17mm... Looks like I need a carb and CDI box... What are your guys suggestions??? Also to put the bigger clutch on do you just buy a newer stock or hinsen and a newer stock side cover??? Thanks L8R Mark

OK... Thanks for the correction... So how do I determine what year it is??? I was told it's an 89... I know for fact that is has the smaller bushings??? If it is an 88 how is that motor??? It has been fully rebuilt with a new crank, Ported, Polished and is 1mm over... Engine builder has lots of experience with these bikes as he used to own and race them... The motor is black if that means anything... Thanks Mark
