Dual sport CR 500 What motor will fit.

Post by Hammer »

I have a 91 CR 500 that is plated.

I was wondering what year motors will fit, this bike.
I want the wide ratio tranny.

What are the best radiators,
Been looking at the Warp 9.
I want to add the fans.

Who would you guys recommend to build my motor.(SO Cal.)

The motor you have is fine, you can swap in the later gears to make it the same as a 93+ motor.

The CR500 rads are so-so at best. You might look into swapping on on CRF rads. My motor runs much cooler in my CRF chassis than it ever did in the CR chassis.

I have the Honda OEM fan kit for the CRF rad too.

The Warp 9 wheels I have seen look like they came off a chinese pit bike. The DNA's look to be better quality

Sounds good, What CRF rads should I look for.
I was thinking the CRF450X because it has the thermo switch hole, which I noticed on Layton's bike

I am a little confused about the gears, I have read here on banned, that you could change the 4rth and 5th,then I read that you can't just change the gears. Is it because I have a 91 that I can change the gears.
Thank's Craig.

Either the 250x or 450x rads with the switch bung like you noticed.

I'll check with Roosty, but I beleive the main and counter shafts are the same, and only a gear swap is required...

Like these? Do you have to change the tabs to mount them, and the tabs for the shrouds?

I was trying to get Fluidyne rads but they don't have one for a 91 500.

By increasing the efficiency of the cooling system, Power-Flo radiators keep modified motors at peak performance Thicker radiator cores increase cooling ability Water passages

The fluidyne ones are like $400 a set...

just find the left side and your all set.

These already have the bracket for the fan kit.

Keep in mind these will need to have the mounts and nipples swapped out for the 500 motor, Solid can do this for you. Im not sure how the shrouds will fit??

You could always try these chinese jobbies....

Are the 250X and 450X radiators identical? size? capacity?

I was thinking the CRF450X because it has the thermo switch hole
dont go searching for X rads just because of the temp hole.....
these are cheap 5$ and theres a vareity of temps you can choose from id recomend 220f if you got a decent power fan (3 amps) (works sweet) lower temp if you are running a weak fan , just JB weld them on

buy a few, buddies are gonna want one,

http://ca.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Stan ... fkhtdAk%3d

the delta fan ive been using has been great, but a few things to watch out for....
if youre runmning a regular voltage regulator and no battery it WILL kill your fan.... dont ask how i know

if youre running a regular voltage regulator and a battery it isnt precise (ive tried 3, 2 brand new trailtech adjustable too) and when your bike is hot it will trip the built in overheat sensor and the fan will cycle on and off aprox 5 seconds each cycle, on 5 sec off 5 sec.......

and these computer fans rip and are very efficient, but be careful about the wires pulling out there real thin, mine just did and its a pain to put them back together, dont worry about water it wont hurt it, i pressure wash it and its held up

DO NOT MOUNT THE FAN TOUCHING THE RADIATOR, IT WILL WEAR THRU

if you are using a stator less than 60 watts i would highly recomend using my way of regulating..... otherwise your battery will go dead when youre in the tight stuff

make sure you read this if you go that route, you will need to run a 10 volt system, probably could get away with a 11 volt li ion setup, 12v wont work very good at all

the 450 will have less power and will be harder to start, and will be heavier, but to make up for it it will require more maintenance.
