Here is my take on washes vs. Gecko Road. The washes are a great camping area, tons of room, and the further in you go, the less idiots there are to deal with. Less idiots means less crime and less concern about your safty and belongings. Gecko is a nice place for trailers and motorhomes because it is paved. The very end of the road is great, but during the last few years, it has become a very crowded spot where all the same people seem to take it all up and there is no room for a large or medium group to invade. The motorhome groups cone off large sections and strictly police their area so that no outsiders can get a good size camp going. I have seen fights breakout there because someone will get there early and cone off enough area for 10 of their buddies motorhomes, and other non related campers come and say scew that police tape I'm parking there anyway. The road side camping is ok, but it doesn't allow for a circle of freinds to camp because getting off the road to far means getting stuck, so people park mostly parralel to each other and doesn't give you the circle camp that keeps others out of your space. Last year we woke up and there was two or 3 motorhomes parked smack next to us in such a way that we had to tell them to move because we couldn't get the bikes out of the toyhauler! Likewise, th washes allow for a big campfire in the circle of camp, where at Gecko the fires are out in the open and along the side of your rig. The other thing is phone reception at Gecko is horrible, and at the washes it works great.

During the season, and especially on big weekends, Glamis becomes a city of it's own with 100's of thousands of people possibly staying there. Crime is a definite possibility in the form of drunken brawlers, theives, and hooligans of all types. You always lock your bikes up at night and when away from camp, and keep your treasured items hidden from sight, never advertise your goodies. Go with a group of trusted folks and if possible have someone stay at the camp when you are out riding. Be aware of your surrounding neighbors and watch for people that lurk around but don't belong to a group near you. Off weekends are more safe because there are less people and less riff raff. The washes are harder to get in and out of quickly so they are safer than Gecko which is a paved road. Loser thieves want to be able to get in, grab your stuff, and get out quick. You can recognise the idiots pretty easy, it's the ones that don't fit in. Folks with no bikes, an empty pick up, wondering around on foot, and angry faced individuals that look like trouble makers. As for guns, it's your call, just remember going to prison sucks.

Spoken like a true veteran.

In all the trips I've done there over the last 25 years. There was only one time I was ripped off. An easter weekend in 94 or 95, a light croud that trip. I guess parts for a 250 3 wheeler were getting scarce? Good thing the quad and 3W were locked to the trailer, as they only got the headlight assembly, and seat and fenders. No tools are needed for that. $750 total dealer cost at the time. Three years later, decided to put it back together, $500 for junk yard stuff. E-bay wasn't invented yet.

Hey to each his own. I don't see that as being lucky. Lucky is having the time to camp your tail off imo. Lets see, we live in houses and sleep in our bedrooms 359 days a year. You get to go to places like Glamis a few times and camp around a big fire drinking with our buds, telling stories about riding, shooting fireworks off. But wait, lets be like AP and BigD, and go home after the ride where we can watch tv, go to sleep early, and basically abondon our buddies at the ride spot until the next day. You call it lucky, I call it wussing out.

I forgot to add, what are we, women? I need to wash my mangina and put some gell in my hair, put on my jammies, watch Melrose Place, then sleep in my bed that I used when I was 12.
